Personally I like the Maxtor and the Western Digital hard drives. Fry's had a 15 gig 7200 rpm Western Digital for 140.00 with a 30.00 rebate just the other day. A friend of mine bought one he said it works great. It comes with all the software to transfere your data from your old hard drive to the new drive sets it up partitions and everything. All you have to do is plug it in and slave your old drive put the disk in then turn on the machine. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I recently purchased a 20 Gig 7000+ rpm ATA/66 Maxtor drive which developed a problem soon after installation. Calling Maxtor and setting up an exchange was easy and even pleasant. I like the way they stand behind their products and will probably stick with them for future expansion and upgrades.

I like Maxtor. Bought last one last year. Have used it for a slave in three different systems without problems. I like the Max Blast software even better. Really makes installation and configuring a snap.

Ukok,
I just bought a Western Digital drive a little while ago and I'm very happy with it. It's quiet, very fast (7200 rpm, 2MB buffer, ATA/66), and it has the embedded Data Lifeguard hardware on the drive that will automatically move your data off of bad sectors.

Yeah, Maxtor for me too. Had loads of problems with Seagate tho'.
By the way UKok and all other UK Sysopt users, if you want some lniks to good hardware retailers then use:
www.dabs.co.uk (http://www.dabs.co.uk) - cheapest component retailer and has free delivery.
www.scan.co.uk (http://www.scan.co.uk) - great for special offers and graphics/sound cards.
www.microwarehouse.co.uk (http://www.microwarehouse.co.uk) - the best for CDR's and stuff not available from the other two! Also free delivery.
Hope this helps,
Rich

Oi!
You can't moan about delivery, it's $1=£1 in the retail world. Us limeys have to set our DVDs to Region 1 if we want to save money.
$9.99 international shipping from Reel.com. Bah!

I have used Seagate, MAxtor and now Western digtial. I have never have had any porblems with Seagate or Maxtor. Actually Maxtor is the best if you are on budget and still want a great drive. But overall I would have to say western d becuase of the quailty they have in their products. I bought a 20.5 gig'er in Nov and it died on Monday I called up western digtial and now questions asked and no hassle they let me RMA the drive I sent it back Tuesday and it should be here in 10 days. That's serivce.

Eh? Quality hard drive lasts 3 months!
Seriously, yeah I agree, WD have the best customer care - but as the topic starter in UK-based they reply won't be as prompt as yours. I think reliability is what we are looking for here.

Please do not multiple post the same thread in different forums (or in the same forum). There's no need, replies get scattered, and it's annoying for someone to reply to one thread then see the same thread in another forum.
Thanks for your support!

I've had various different hard drives, but have mostly used western digitals, seagates, HP, IBM, quantum, and conner drives.
I personnally have never had an issue with any conner or quantum drives I've used, I've had the most trouble with western digital drives and seagates. I attribute most of my western digital woes to the EZ-BIOS setup tool. I attribute my issues with Seagate drives as poor quality control by the manufacturer. May have been just bad luck on my side.
I deal with a vendor who assembles UNIX equipment packages that ripped out every HP drive they had in hundreds of systems everywhere on the planet - Also - HP stopped making their own drives and now buys them. They mostly install quantum drives now.
I haven't owned an operating conner drive in some time, but , when I did run them, they were rock solid.
IBM seems to make a generally good product and seem to have good quality control and seem to keep up with the cutting edge as far as I can tell. I haven't had to deal with their customer service side regarding hard drives, so can't really speak to that. Prices are a bit higher as well.
That is the benefit of my personal experience.

Try IBM, those drives rock. Ordered a 20 gig from staples with a $30 dollar coupon that came out to be 129 + tax. It was a 7200RPM drive also. Great deal.

The IBM 22GXP is where it's at! 7200 rpms, 2MB buffer, and UDMA66! It runs fairly cool and is virtually silent!
I hope to get another one as soon as I get the funds.

Fujitsu ... I don't know how good their board is, but what I can tell you is that if you ever have any problems (in or out of warranty) they will replace it, no questions asked, FOC, the whole nine yards.
Their "after sales service" is second to none ! = VERY important to me !!!!
