I just bought a computer. My brother is infamous for messing up computers. I was just wondering if there was a way to put a password on your computer so they can't use it at all. I heard that you can do it in the CMOS setup but when I go to my CMOS/BIOS setup there is no password option. Help

I bet your just overlooking the option in the bios to enable the password.

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Oliver,

If you can't find the password option in the BIOS you could try using the screen saver password option in Windows. Of course your brother could always just reset (reboot) your computer and turn the password feature off.

If you don't have a bios passwd option(most computers do) the you need a multiuser os to lock it down like NT, W2K, or even better Linux. If your brother knows alot about computers he can defeat bios passwd pretty easily though.

Hello,

I know it might sound a little bit extreme but only real option is a removable HD.
You can remove CMOS pass with wipecmos, remove NT pass with security reinstall, bypass win95/98 pass and so on and on….
Talk with him and share a part of your space and it might do.

Some bios will give you the option to have the password guard just the bios or the entire system. Choose system and when you reboot, the pass will be required before windows is loaded. Otherwise, the pass will just be required when you go into the bios to change settings.

Password protecting the bios will only protect the bios. He could still create havoc in your OS and programs. There is very little you can do about that. Maybe handcuffs and the bed post???? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
