Well, I have a 17 yr old son...need I say more...Hard drive is getting packed from his internet explorations. I am a relative novice, but would like to clean things up. Win 98, AOL 5.0.....So far I have deleted the history for that day and prior days, temp internet files, temp files. Yet when I go to a web page where there were selections, I still see darkened areas where I have been. (understand?)....What am I missing? I am also afraid of these "cookie" things. How can something that sounds so sweet cause me future probs? Any help is appreciated

the cookies you can delete if you have site that use passwords and you havew them auto saved for those sites you will have to reinter them buts that is the only bad part
so dump them all
if you want to make it easer there are a lot of programs that will do it all for you I use clean sweep http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

increase the security in ur browser, this will eliminate the cookies, at least the automatic ones!
also try running the cleandisk application on your c: properties.
you can also delete or clean out the history folder, mind you that this things don't really take much space, you are prob loosing it all in all the MP3 and other stuff a 17 yr old would download.

More Space 99 can help you to reclaim valuable hard-drive space. It can be used to search your system for duplicate files and large files and folders. You can send duplicates to the Recycle Bin, delete them altogether, or archive them in ZIP format. A variety of options enable you to scan for partial or exact filename duplicates. Search for all duplicates or only those of a particular type. The program also lets you see an overview of your system, with the option to set file chronology to show the age of your files. Dormant files and folders, as well as space hogs, can be quickly identified. You can then print out this information or copy it to the Clipboard. For safety's sake, you can set up a "Safe Harbor" for important files. You can also clear your Internet cache files quickly and easily. More Space is extremely well-done software that includes excellent help, an attractive interface, and an intuitive design. A 16-bit version is also available.

Alan,
I suggest Steping Cautiously with Cleansweep and washer and cleanspace and all that stuff. All too often the program informs you that you don't need certain files which you actually do. This from experience.
Rule of thumb - don't delete any .dll files even if you're informed that they are or "may" no longer be needed.

Clean the drive with lots of hot soapy water. Oops wrong forum.
Anyway you can setup the browser to minimize history by setting it to 1 day. or you could delete all the history and the contents of windows\temp from autoexec.bat
My favourite solution to this problem is to create a ramdisk in autoexec.bat and tell the browzer to put its temp files there. I have an 8 Meg ramdisk on 128meg machine. when you shut down all temp stuff goes bye-bye
