I am having this weird problem with my mouse... Here we go.

Whenever I contact to the internet with my dial-up networking when I move my mouse it is VERY jumpy. I cannot contorl it. It takes very big gaps between moves. Kind of like a shutter. This only happens when contacted to the net. Now when I disconnet the move moves fine again. What gives? I am using the latest drivers for it also. I am running Window3s 98 SE. Can anyone help?

try this:
go to ur settings and make the mouse movement the lowest setting as possible.
and when u go in the net, it still does the same thing, the I think that U HAVE A VIRUS!
or the mouse is screw-d

I'll run a virus scan but that may not be it. If I run the scan and that doesn't work AND the setting change doesn't work I'll go by a new mouse.

check your system resources when you connect to the net and how much ram do you have

It probably isn't a virus - otherwise you'd have the problem constantly.

I've seen this happen, but only on a computer using a serial mouse instead of a PS/2 mouse. It is infuriating!!!

My solution was to spend $6 on a PS/2 connector once discovering that the motherboard could accept it, then take the serial mouse off and put on a PS/2 mouse.

There were conflicts on the ASUS board between the resources needed for the serial mouse and the network/internet connection.

You might also simply need to manually re-assign a couple of IRQ resources in control panel / system / device manager / computer / irq resources - if your PCI bus is using the same IRQ to connect to the com port your internet connection is on as it is using for the serial mouse - this is what you can expect to see.

Check those things out - you'll probably find the answer there somewhere.

And even though I SERIOUSLY doubt it's a virus, a scan couldn't hurt - update those definitions first - I just posted a link for the new norton definitions a few days ago on this board.

Axel is probably right - your modem and mouse are sharing the same IRQ - change one of these resources, or better yet, get a PS2 mouse.

Who is your Internet provider?

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. At the time I had a pretty low spec PC and only 16 MB of Ram, I also was on AOL and when downloading the mouse would jerk. Are you on AOL and trying to download a large file at the same time?

if it is only when you are online, does everything else run really slow too...? if everything on the computer runs slow, then it could be the modem eating up all your processor use. For example, an HSP micromodem is capable of using 50% of you processing cycles if you are on an older pentium.

I had this problem in Win98 SE. Thought it was just this Compaq since there are so many problems with it.

Well I was cruising around in some settings and in a very unlikely place (and I can't remember it now) I found this slider adjustment that was set at the highest level. A message read something like 'adjust is you have mouse problems'. I moved the slider back 1/4 and the mouse smoothed out.

I remember thinking 'why is the mouse adjustment here'. Maybe someone remembers where this slider is located.

That slider is in Control Panel/System/Performance/Graphics, Jim.

The few times I've had to lower it with older machines it has worked very well. Only time I have found that it's necessary is when the mouse is jumpy. Kenny, you might give it a try.

I've had this problem, modem and mouse using the same com port.

This si going to blow your mine It is a PS/2 mouse. I have a TV Tuner installed so I might look there first, wasmn't doing it before I had it installed. I'll try changing some IRQ's around. Oh I have 392 megs of ram so that can't be it. My serivce provider is a small company called BestWeb.net

I'll try to trsck it dwon thee. I mean it is to the point where you can't do anything while the connection is on. I am not using AOL though. My modem is an external US robitics 56kx2.

I would almost certainly say its an IRQ problem
if its a win modem see if its on IRQ12
even try changing the slot the modem is in
