I have a 24x CD-ROM drive (a Cyber drive). The unit has always been a little flaky, but recently it's been giving me fits.

The drive will no longer read many of my CD-ROMS. It will read some, it won't read others. It is consistent on which it will and won't. Of those it will read consistenly, some are new and some are old. Same for those it won't read consistently.

When I insert those it can't read, it groans and grinds.

I've opened the unit and cleaned it thoroughly, but this didn't help.

Any suggestions? Or should I just toss it.

Thanks

You OPENED it?! You think you damaged the laser calibration?

I've had 2 cyber drives and they are just plain junk both of the 24x i had would not read most of the cd's that come in the mag's
or cdr cd's and even some store bought cd's I got rid of them and will not buy another no way.
It's time for a new drive as that one is just junk and you will never get it to read right again sorry http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Yeah, I opened it. It performs the same as it did before, so I doubt it caused damage or misalignment.

I must agree with scotter. The unit is junk and I'll just toss it.

Thanks for the replies.
