I have tried to load a few programs from my A: drive recently and I get an error message, A device not connected to your computer. What? I can view data on the disk when I click A: drive in MyComputer. I just can't run any .exe files from it. Someone ever heard of this? Stumped

Well I will go for the simplistic answer first... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Did you recently build or redo this system? If so, are the cables connected correctly? Does the floppy light stay on constantly? If so then flip the cable.
Sorry if this is too simplistic.

Nah, It isn't cables. System has ran fine in the past. Recently added a Hp Scanner and loaded up some software for it. In the processes in my system menu, a SCSI adapter was added. I don't have one. The error message is, " A device connected to system is not functioning." Seems to me it may be linked to the Errorenous SCSI chain. I removed all programs associated with The **** scanner and didn't help. Things I have checked:
Is it located in the A: position on the cable? Yes (At the end after the flip)
Is the cable seated properly? Yes
Is the cable connected backwards? NO
Is the drive set in bios to A: 1.44M 3.5 inch? Yes
What else is there to check? I don't know?

take out the scanner and check it, or maybe the SCSI...

Mattyb,
Have you checked your system for a virus? Also, you can try to remove the floppy drive controller and the floppy drive from Device Manager and reboot. Windows 95/98 will reinstall the drivers automatically. If that doesn't work you can restore the registry (if you have Win98) from a date before you installed the scanner. Shut down Windows into MS-DOS mode and type "scanreg/restore" at the c:\> prompt. Pick a date from before you installed the scanner. You will have the re-install any software or any settings since that date. The SCSI entry in Device Manager is Normal for HP scanners. It uses SCSI emulation over the parallel port. Hope this helps!
Possibly iy is trying to create a tmp file on "a" and there isn't enough room for it to do so.
Can you copy it to your HDD and run it?

Thanks for the input, I will give them a try. Far as copying file to HD and running from there? I have tried several programs, and I don't think I will be copying them all to my HD to run them. Its gotta be either the registry or the darn drive itself. Tonight I will be installing drive in seperate computer to see if it is at fault. Just out of curiosity, What type of error messages might you get if the floppy is Dirty and filled with Lint. Would you be able to view what is on the disc, but yet not run programs? Seems if I am able to view the programs, copying the programs, I should be able to execute? Seems odd. Again thanks, any other suggestions welcome.

Have you tried uninstalling the floppy drive and the floppy drive controller from the device manager, then reboot and let windows reinstall them?? Just a wild shot.

I have now, removed drive from system settings along with floppy drive controller in windows. I uninstalled all programs recently added to system (ie. HP scanner). Removed scanner from system. I rebooted the sytem. Windows found floppy drive controller and added floppy disk (Standard floppy drive controller, and then added generic floppy disk). I am now going to try and reload registry from earlier date. (win98)
