Watching the Screensavers this week and having previously hearing about the Swap File
I took the plunge, as suggested by Kate Botello, to speify my own virtual memory settings. She said double your Ram for both min and max. So having 160 Mb, I set them at 320.Then the message says your computer may not restart...nice. Anyway you gotta restart to change the settings, and it did.( hope it does tommorow) Did I do the right thing, that
is the question???? Can't tell yet if it did anygood....

What's the Screensavers? One of those computer shows where people who "think" they know what they're doing tell people who don't know what they're doing what to do?

I really can't believe they'd still be giving advice that is so old that it's just not true anymore. Well, actually yes I can believe it.

Setting your swapfile at double your RAM amout was good advice many years ago when people typically had 16mb of RAM or less. If you have 128mb of RAM or more then you can easily set your swapfile at equal to or even less than your RAM amout. A swapfile too big will even slow Windoze down.

I have 192mb RAM and my swapfile set at 128mb.

96 MB ram and swap @150.
Did Kate and Leo screw you? No! Don't worry about it Pickle it is kind of like the illegal operation thing, did you do something against the law no.
Well anyways set the MIN and MAX to 150MB's or so and don't worry what it says. It will restart.
The reason for a fixed swap file is so it does not get fragmented, if it becomes defragmented it may be slower(or is it the other way around?). Haveing 160MB of ram you probly never even use the swap file.

Man, I'm more concerned about what it said about Office2K erasing itself after 50 uses if unregistered. Is that true???
I never register anything. Too much Big Brother now.

TV rots your brain. I try to stay away from it. If I do watch, it's The Learning Channel, Discovery, PBS (for Nova only), or Comedy Central.

On one of my junks, the HP Pavilaslug, I have 160mb. Often I'd check system resources and find them as low as 17%. This is with most everything in msconfig>start-up unchecked.. So obviously I have something leaking memory. I've got a memory saver prog but haven't tried it yet as the Pavilaturd has now expired(temporarily I hope). I have checked the swap file on the HP during these low resource times and the swap file would be in use but not too large. These times would be during the usage of a scanner and printer, not at the same time though. My largest files moved are usually no larger than 26mb. This HP must have a swapfile. DrVette

PICKEL!

Oh, there you are... hey man, no matter how much ram you have, you still use your swap file. I have 128MB sdram, and had my virtual memory set at 200mb. Once in a while I DID get a out of memory popup. "Not Enough Virtual Memory. So, I went to 256mb swap file, and I never got the popup again.

Even if you had 512mb, you would still need a swap file. It's just necessary.

Specifying the same number value for min and max does keep it from fragmenting, and it does keep winDOZE from having to "dynaMICALLY RESIZE THE SWAP FILE" to take care of it's needs. Hence, less processor "chugging" wasting precious cycles that could be used to kill that damned *&%^*% J)&)^(TU that's trying to shoot your head off from the top of the steps!

Don't worry about the warning, winDOZE likes to be in control, even if it doesn't do a good job of it!

But anyone with a tiny swap file, well, never mind, I'm not here to flame or get burned, but you cqan run out of virtual memory. Of course if that does happen, just use your vaccuum-matic and make it bigger. Worked for me. just hook up the vaccuum cleaner to the patented adapter, put it in place, and enjoy the ride.

Oh yeah, Kate Botello and Leo ROCK! I've got lots of good ideas, advice from them, and you shouldn't bash someone unless you know who they are and what you're talkiong about.

I think I need one of those vaccuum-matics.

To quote uncle LEO http://www.zdnet.com/zdtv/callforhelp/howto/jump/0,3652,2217131,00.html

"Now create three new DOS partitions. The first is for your swap file. Make it about 150MB. Next, create your main Windows partition. Make it as big as you want, but leave 500MB or so free for your final data partition:

This is where I got the swap file size from.I have also never run out of vitual memory. But then again I usally reboot twice a day.

This is still one of the best swapfile guides around, IMO.

There's other good stuff in the Speed Demonz link (located in the menu on the left).

jad1097
02-12-2000, 09:22 PM
Yes. The Screensavers is on the only computer related TV channel there is, ZDTV. Zdnet is owned by the same person who also makes many magazines including Pc magazine.

I never registered my Office 2000, it never erased itself. I think I passed 50 uses by now.

As for swap file sizes, well...some guides just don't get it! Think about it, it's purpose is to make up for insufficient ram capacity. They recommended used to be 3 times the ram, but that was when 32M of ram was very expensive! Then it moved to 2 times teh ram, that was when everyone had about 64M on average.

Well, I built several PC's with 512M or more, and found they are much faster to respond with 150M swap file than with a 700M swap file Windows sets up.

I use a 128M on my PC with 256M of ram...works very well.

I don't know who the chick is, but even though I've never seen the show I know Leo very well. He's had a call in radio show in my area for about the last six years. Out of the media computer Gurus, Leo is definitely one of the best. He doesn't know everything though. I recall emailing him to correct him on a couple subjects.

Leo started out on a radio show with Gina Smith who now has her own nationwide computer radio show. Whatever you do, don't listen to Gina's show, except for entertainment, she's a real ditz.

Oh well, I wish I had satellite, all my friends talk about the wonders of ZDtv
but me... I just read about it from the channels.
That's ok... I have more time to practice and get my wireless project on the road.
