Every thing was fine. Then i installed a new hard drive. Western digital expert 20.5GB.
I installed Winblows 98 using all the same settings and drivers as before. But now when i boot up i get a message
"SCSI Host adapter configuration error"

Then i get a messgage

"windows protection error You need to restart your computer"

I reboot and on the second or third attempt, all the SCSI devices are recognized and listed and the system boots normally.

This happens every time i boot, after not having used the system for a few hours.

I have an Adaptec 2940AU host adapter.

Check the SCSI termination portion of your adapter documentation. On some of my adapters, there is a jumper you need to set to tell the SCSI card to self terminate at it's end, or to tell it that it's in the middle of the chain ( if you have an external connection ) and to not terminate at the card.

Next - make absolutely sure that none of your devices in the middle of your chain are either self terminating, or if they are jumpered to terminate.

I take it your drive is a SCSI drive - how is it set? To terminate, or not to terminate?

Is there ANY chance the SCSI cable is damaged?

Also - on some cables, unused ports on the cable may need to be terminated to skip over them, but that's really rare - the adapter should skip over unused cable ports.

Then, I'd check the IRQ setting for the adapter.

Then I'd check the adapter BIOS to see if it's current or needs to be flashed.

Then I'd check the PCI bus driver in control panel to see if it's having any trouble.

Then, I'd disconnect and reconnect EVERYTHING in the SCSI chain including reseating the adapter in the PCI slot and all of the ribbon cable connections.

I'm assuming you made sure no two items were using the same SCSI ID - including the adapter card itself.

Let us know how it comes out.
