Just got back from an email-blind trip to the UK. My Compaq laptop modem could not detect a dial tone. I believe my modem is looking for the center two connections to produce a live line. However, looking at a BT-plug to RJ11-plug diagram I find the following mapping:
BT(1) to RJ(2)
BT(2) to RJ(1)
BT(3) to RJ(4)
BT(4) to RJ(3)
I don't know which two BT terminals produce a live line. So, it seems there are six possible combos to try. Anyone know the answer?

You are correct. The two interior wires of the RJ will have dialtone.

Hi tbhoover,
I'm from the UK and the standard UK phone connector has a 6 pin connection. Of these the middle two (pins 3 & 4 ) are used by the modem. Don't forget that to connect in the UK you really need a modem that has been approved in accordance with council decision 98/482/EC for pan-European single terminal connection to PSTN.

My Compaq purchase in USA worked fine in Netherlands and Belgium on local dial-up lines. Does this mean it should work in the UK if I get it wired right?
