I'm currently typing this on my backup computer that has already automatically download the 11 Windows Updates but I'm afraid to install them because I believe those same updates already toasted my primary computer, which currently has the dreaded BSOD condition.

Does anyone know if installing these updates is safe, or which one is bad?

I posted a sticky about the supposedly bad one.

From other reports, it seems that malware was causing the BSOD.

Scan your system for malware first. Malwarebytes or Superantispyware would be a start.

...and do regular backups of your system so that it doesn't matter if an update goes bad.

The very fact that you asked this question tells me that you do not back up your system. That concerns me.

Automatic removal is not recommended for the rootkit behind these blue screens, because it could render your machine unbootable.

If you don't have an installation CD, you may find other copies of atapi.sys or atapi.sy_ by running these commands at the cmd prompt or the recovery console.
cd \
dir atapi.sys /s /p
or
dir atapi.sy_ /s /p
If you do have a re-installation disc and are not real comfortable at the command prompt, you could remove the update with a repair install, and then replace the infected files from within Windows.
Either way, you will then want to run a scan with an application that detects rootkits.
