I have been asked to slave a drive from a failed system (about 5 years old) into a new system the owner bnought yesterday. I am guessing the new destop will have a SATA drive. Do the new systems generally still support IDE drives?

Most of them do, and I use the cd/dvd rom ribbon if present.
Sometimes I have to use my ribbon as everything is SATA and nothing is plugged into the ide slot.

I opened the system and there does not appear to be an IDE controller to connect the old drive to. The motherboard is an IPIEL-LA3 and I checked the specs online. I don't see any IDE support in the specs. Are there adapters to connect and IDE drive to a SATA drive or controller?

You would either need to buy a PCI IDE adapter card or a SATA-IDE adapter.

Some SATA to IDE adapters are flimsy, so I'd probably go with a PCI card.

I did not know that and IDE hard drive can connect to a PCI connector on the motherboard. Thanks

Check out the blue connector next to the ram.

That is the upgrade and service manual. Page 46 figures 8 and 9.

But thanks for the link to the manual.

Took a couple of visits to stores to find this (http://sewelldirect.com/SATA-to-IDE-Converter.asp) and I got a lesson in the quality of the tech/sales staff in these stores. I learned never to go into one unarmed and always shop around, not so much for prices but for quality of staff.
