is it worth setting up a SLI 285 or is more economic to simply go for a 295 ?

price / performance wise.

These articles maybe of great help.

the problem was that all the 5970 are all out of stock every where.
and 5870 as well, but i just found out new inventory arrived, so i'm ordering a 5870 now
but i already have a 285, i guess i'll get 2x 5870 instead, since 5970 are still no where to be found.

I would use the 285 for about 3 to 4 weeks longer. From what I have read about the 5970, I think it would be worth it.

i manage to scavenger a 5870 from some stores that still had 2 of them on stock
by the time i got mine, and wanted to get the 2nd one, it was gone already....

now i have to wait until new year before they come with more... so no CrossFire until then... oh well :(
