Hello-

I currently have an aging K6/233 and now have some money saved up for an upgrade. With my current funds, an Athlon 500-600 on an FIC SD-11 is what I settle on. I use my computer for some gaming, but I don't require super high-end performance, just moderate performance. (I have a Voodoo2, maybe later it'll turn into a GeForce or something)

I have one question though. My current computer has 2 strips of 32MB each PC66 SDRAM. I gather that with the Athlon I will now need new PC100 SDRAM? I only want to get 64MB, due to funds http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif.

My question is, on Pricewatch, and other price sites, PC100 RAM is between $35 and like $100. The cheap stuff is "generic" and I hear it doesn't work with Athlons? I am kinda lost on this subject, so could anyone explain all of this to me? Is this "generic" stuff not-workable, and do I have to go for the $70 fancy stuff?

Also, the best prices I can find for an SD-11 w/Athlon 550 (probably the one I am going to get) is appx. $350 (after shipping and tax). Anyone know of other sites with better prices?

Thanks

Ruahrc

The generic stuff will most likely work fine.

Although I advise against getting the FIC SD11 board. In my experince, it's a perverbial POS. But others have had no problems with it.

Just a warning. I use a K7M in my computer, and it works great.

~EDIT: spelling.

just built a SD-11 and Athlon 500 and have not had any problems at all. I bit the bullet and got 128 mg of curcial memory as the last thing I wanted was a bunch of problems. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for.
