CD Burner Problems

Hi All!

I am using (trying) a Memorex 1622 burner. I can listen to audio disks, I can load software programs with it. But, it will now burn! I tried the software that came with it, CDRWIN by GoldenHawk, I think, Nothing. Will not burn. I have configured it as a master on ide controller 2, with the rom as it's slave - rom as master with r/w as a slave - rom as hd slave and r/w a master on 2 - r/w as hd slave and rom as master on 2 - I'm out of options here. All the ribbons are red on pin one/........

what kind of error message do you get when you try to burn?

Does Windows recognize it properly? Sounds like configuration problem since it'll read discs OK.

In device manager, my burner shows up distinctly as a CD-R, while my other drives say CD-ROM.

Not familiar with CDRWIN software, have you tried Easy CD creator?

By the way, I forgot to mention that when I try to burn, the program locks up when it starts to access the burner. This happens no matter what software I use. There's no chance for an error message, it just freezes. I have downloaded all the updates, etc. from the memorex website.

Yeah, device manager shows it as Memorex CDR 1622. So, I'm "assuming" (DOH!) that it knows what it is. But, when I remove it via the device manager, and then reboot, it just shows up again in device manager, no "new hardware found" dialog when winDOZE starts.

No, I haven't tried EZCD creator, just the NTI CD maker Pro program that came with it, the CDRWIN, and program to burn cd's from mp3's - mp3cd maker.

So, anyone have any more input before I have to send this drive back? I would much rather use it than send it back and alienate a fellow trader.

I have a Memorex 4224 I get all kinds of crazy stuff happening. I wasn't impressed with the NTI software , as it was glitchy in recording MP3's so I did what everyone said to do, I bought Easy Cd Creator 4 deluxe..
What a piece this software is.. OMG sooooo Many shared DLL's Im affraid to uninstall it.. I run the Direct CD and my Icons start flashing busy.. every 3 seconds or so... I try to use the DCD and it fries my CD's in the middle of the formatting..
Maybe the Drive... maybe not..

Try turning of the Auto Insertion Notice in the setup tab in Device Mangler only leave Disconnect checked reboot then try. You Flashed the most recent firmware correct?

Other than that I am as baffled as you...
Whatever you do unless you you get it free dont use EZCD creator

A bit of a long shot, but remove your normal CD-ROM from the IDE channel and see if this makes any differnce. It maybe that the CD-RW and CD-ROM are cross-channeling. Other than that I have no idea. Do you have any IRQ conflicts?

Mike, It really seems that the software you are using is not recognizing it as a burner. See if there is a update for the software or try Nero (free trial) or Ez-CD Creator (borrow from someone) I know both of these last softwares continually have patches for so they can recognize drives.

One thing i found with my burner is i had mutiple ghost listings in device manager.
Go into win in safe mode and check for ghost listings, delete all listings for your cdr and reboot.Windows will set it up agin then see if it locks up. Oh and check your mail http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Well, no irq conflicts. Auto-insertion notice off. Latest firmware ran.

I did go to safe mode device mangler and ther were 4 instances of rom and r/w. Removed them all and rebooted. Now only one instance of each. But still no-go! Funny, there was also an extra hd showing. Removed it too, and didn't come back?!?!?!?

By the way, my rom light only comes on when it's reading the disk. However, the r/w light is on all the time (as long as there is a disk in it) flickers at boot up, and when you first put a disk in it. Also flickers when reading a disk, but after it's done, light stays on. Is this normal for a r/w?

GSlammer, My Yamaha unit would NOT work at all. Went through all sorts of stuff.
Turned out my SCSI card wasn't fast enough to handle the transfer rates and the CDRW simply said "fergetaboutit" and stopped trying to read and write.
I didn't notice if you're running IDE or SCSI, however, the HDD that you are trying to send from should have a pretty high transfer rate to keep on feeding data to the CDRW. Once I got the new scsi card and determined which of my HDD's had the fasted tfer rate, all has been GROOOOVEY since.

How 'bout this? In my bios, I have my primary slave (now my ROM) set to "auto", and my secondary master (burner) also set to auto. Should I try to force it in another mode. I think they are maybe user and ...... Have to go check, I guess...

CD-RW master IDE 2...CDrom slave IDE 2. My book says " avoid connecting either on same
primary connector as Hard disc" Make sure all jumpers are set accordingly. Then install software. get with on that. later

Also, remove some of your PCI cards and try to burn something again.

I'm thinking a I/O resource conflict that does not show up until you need something to work.

Especially with SB-Lives and PCI modems.

Just try it to find out, if it is this, you can get around it by changing some bios device settings.

Well, I tried moving my pci cards around, but no-go!

If I don't get something going today, I'm going to have to send it back on Wednesday. I feel bad enough as it is for taking so long now, but I wanted to make sure I had exhausted every possibility.

I had a Smart and Friendless CDR drive and had a very simillar problem. System freezes up and i get blue screen error every time it starts to burn.

Hours of tech support- no solution. Sent it back and traded it for a brand new CDRW. Sold it and bought a Hewlett Packard.

Anyway, my point is that you might never solve the problem, unfortunately. But one thing i do know, is that if you flashed your drive's firmware and there happenned to be a disk in it, your drive is TOAST. It will never burn another CD again. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Has anyone seen a firmware upgrade for the TDK VELOcd? Still wont burn at 8x for me cause my abit be-6II thinks its a mode 4 instead of a udma 33 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Nope, drive was empty when I flashed firmware. I've tried every imaginable configuration of slave, master, and ide controllers.

Guess I have to give up on this one....
