I recently helped a friend get their XBox 360 on the Internet. My problem is that the solution is a temporary one. Let me give you the network info:

Internet connection via Time Warner Road Runner supplied cable modem. Level One Wireless Router (WBR-3045TX) assigns IP addresses for all hardware. Xbox is in a room with no Ethernet jacks so I installed a Netgear wireless game adapter (WGR111). Could not get the XBox on the Net until I opened up ports 53, 80, 88 and 3074 on the router (Virtual Server).

The IP address of the router is 192.168.1.1. The IP assignment range on the router is 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.110. Both the game adapter and the XBox are set to have their IP dynamically assigned. Unfortunately, the router does not do DHCP Reservation so I tried giving the XBox a static IP of 192.168.1.111. I also assigned the Subnet 255.255.255.0 and Default Gateway 192.168.1.1. DNS Servers were left at "Automatic". I rebooted the game adapter and the XBox, but now the XBox won't even connect with the game adapter. I tried assigning a static IP to the game adapter too, but that didn't help. If I set both the XBox and game adapter back to dynamically assigned IP, everything works. Okay, so why not leave it alone and back away slowly?

When opening the ports on the Virtual Server tab of the router, I'm setting up Port Forwarding. The IP assigned for those open ports is the current IP address of the XBox. If the XBox gets a new IP address the port forwarding won't work. I need to figure out why the XBox won't work when I give it a static IP that's within the Subnet of the router. Any permanent solutions short of changing the network equipment would be greatly appreciated.

The manual for the Level One router can be found at:

Thanks,

Barry

You may have done this but this has helped me in the past

http://portforward.com/networking/staticip-xbox360.htm

Also checl your NAT settings make sure they are not set to high.

Thanks for the link. I was on that site but didn't see this article. Anyway, the problem may be that I did not set up the DNS Server Addresses. I'll give that a shot.
