Hello,

i have some strange problems with an older PC (PC-Chips MOBO with VX pro,Intel 166 MMX,64 MB EDO Ram, 2gb Seagate, Mitsumi 16x CD-Rom). On this machine you canīt install Dos from floppy or even boot from floppy. Iīve installed win98 from CD. There you canīt execute programms in the Dos-Mode. In every cases the thing still freezes or put out the ereror message "error in EXE"!

So whatīs up with this thing (Changed floppy and cpu... no solution on the way!)

Thanx for any help

Hello

I have difficulty understand the problem of yours.
Can you execute a dos command from the "run" option - eg chkdsk? Can you start win in DOS mode?
If you can't run the old DOS application it is likely that you have a 32bit HD and it might cause problem with the old DOS application.
If you can't boot from the floppy it is possible that it is disabled during the boot procedure.

hm, ok I see itīs hard to explain! I run the dosmode but everytime a want to start a dos-exe programm the system freezes or I will get this error message! If I try to from Floppy it says start ms-dos and then freeze or error message!! I donīt know how to say otherwise.

Under Win98 everything runs fine! But I could install win98 only per CD-ROM!

Your floppy as well as DOS programs do not run in DOS?

Hmmm... have you tried creating a boot disk in another (100% working) computer to see what happens?

For some reason, it seems your DOSmode files (autoexec.dos, config.dos), have some problem... OR it *could* be a virus... In every case, a boot from a diskette made in another computer (and write-protected, please) should work...

Try updating your Video drivers. I had the same problem when use DOS on my Win98 and that seem to fix it.

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or Folders".

2. In the Named box, type "*.pif" (without the quotation marks), and then press
ENTER.

3. Right-click the "Exit to DOS.pif" file, and then click Properties.

4. Click the Program tab, and then click the Advanced tab.

5. Click to select the "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration" check box, and then
click OK.

or edit dosstart.bat and look for the culprit.
