Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : My CDROM reads some CDs and not others - why?
i have an old 4 speed cd rom, that i have had this problem with for some time. it reads some of my CDs but not others. i thought possibly that some scratch marked CDs would not work, but i put them in another machine, and they work flawlessly.
i have heard one time that it may possibly be a bug in one of the DLL files in win95a/b. have any one else had such a problem?

It might possably be a worn out cd drive! the laser head might be out of adjustment, may be in need of a cleaning ect ect. With it being a 4x it might be cheaper just to pickup a replacement drive!

Some drives simply don't like some CDs. The demo disks that some with magazines are really bad for that. Most of those CDs work fine in my old 8x drive, but lock up in my 24x drive, my 4x2x8 burner, and my 4x 4 disk changer. In your case I'd look into upgrading to a newer (and hopefully better quality) CD drive.

Its also possible that the CD's you are attempting to use, are not of a format supported by your older 4x drive.
Some older units could not read multi-session CD's (not likely in your case), and others could not read CD's which contained open sessions/tracks (more likely in your case).
There are still other causes, like newer 80min CD's that your older drive just can't make sense of.
If its possible to upgrade the firmware for your current CD ROM, then by all means give that a shot. Otherwise, my guess is its time to go ahead and replace it..........
