I have a friend that has a Compaq Presario (sp?) with a P166mHZ. Does anyone know if it's possible to install a faster CPU?

I told him I will install a new motherboard, if that's what it takes. Anyone thing a new MB might be the best route?

Oh, his computer is a model 4712 (That's the info he gave me)

YOu should be able to go to 233 (pentium) with it but that is all witha regular CPU. YOu can get a 400MHz Evergreen chip for it w/o getting a new mobo but a new mobo and K6-2 400 or P2 400 would be cheaper. Is it a desktop or tower case? And does it look like a normal sized AT or ATX mobo?

I know my response sounds like an old Chrysler cranking on a cold morning, but, I NEVER reccomend upgrading, well hardly ever, anyway,, why not just overclock the old bird get some good cooling and save the bucks for a new system.. By the time you get all the stuff to upgrade, you can buy a new system. Alien

Read my post here....http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum2/HTML/004032.html Its about my compaq 4540 wich up until about a month ago was a 233mmx k6 and now its running a k62 400mhz 3dnow deal.....you might find that your motherboard has more life in it than you originaly thought...and it wont cost you much in the end http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
