How does one get the to programs to co-exist on the same system? I need to open a Word document that will only open in Word97 and my company just upgraded to Office2000.
I need to figure this out soon as that file needs to be updated and sent back to the originator. Thanks!
I am confused, what exactly are you trying to do? As far as I know all w97 files will open and in w2000, and about 95% will work the other way. If you have both 97 and 2000 installed on your computer, and want to open a file with 97 but it is associated with 2000, just open up 97 , then go to file > open.

Is it possible for Word97 and Word 2000 to be installed on the same machine? That's what I'm trying to figure out. If they can, getting to the file is easy.

I have two different versions of Publisher on one of my computers, had three versions at one time. When you go to install Office 2000, it will scan your system and it asked me if I wanted to keep the prior version installed. I choose yes.
The only part I didn't like was that since the old version of Pub was installed in the C/program/office folder, the new Publisher was installed in another folder. Kind of like the office folder had all the new 2000 programs except Pub.
The next time I did the same thing, I first un-installed the old Publisher version, Installed Office 2000 letting everything go into the default folders, then installed the old Publisher into a new folder Publisher 98.
I assume this would be the same for Word. Bdog is correct, you don't need the different versions. The reason I did so was that I wanted to make sure I liked the new version first, before getting rid of the old. For some reason, I hated Pub 98, and loved Pub 97. Pub 2000 is better than both, but does not allow saving as a '97 file.
Hope this helps
Dave
