Hello.
I have a Dell Inspiron 710m. I'm thinking of putting a solid state hard drive in it.
1. Are mobos for laptops proprietary, or will they support other drives?
2. Is this a stupid idea?

Laptop hard drives are standardized for the most part. I think that model has a 2.5" IDE drive, not SATA.

I don't see why you would spend so much money for a SSD on that old laptop, especially an IDE SSD drive.

What are you trying to accomplish with the upgrade?

Faster booting, better battery life, more hard drive space, etc?
