I just put together a new system, an ATHLON K7 600 on an Asus K7M with 13.7 Gig Maxtor (7200-rpm) 128 ram and a Guillemot Xentor 32mb video card. The system rocks! I have not built a system in 4 +years, and I only did that once too. However, it was very strait forward and I had some help for this board last week.
My issue is, when I boot up the computer, both my system speaker and my stereo speakers are beeping and beeping. The beeping continues even while I am running windows, but slowly stops after 5 minutes or so. Then after it stops it will not start up again until I turn the computer off and let it sit for the day or night. If I shut down the computer for 30 minutes and reboot it-, there is no beeping. I have checked all the settings on the BIOS and in windows- nothing seems out of place. The only little thing I see is an error in the hardware properties for “PCI Management Bus” it cannot find the Drivers for that. The sound card is onboard and most of the Bios settings I did not change. I tried setting all the BIOS to default, but that did nothing.
I can understand if I did something wrong and there is an error, but why does it stop and not start up again until it sits for a while. The beeping starts immediately after turning the power up, so it has to be something in the Bios or on the Board!

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Thanks

Make sure your processor fan is plugged into the correct plug. There are two together, one says CPU, the other says case. I had the same trouble the first time I ran the K-7. The fan monitors are alerting you that the processor fan is not working.

That did the trick, Thanks!

Strat 1:
I am also beginning to build a 600 MHz system based on the K7M mobo. Were there any gotchas you might like to pass along to someone who will be soon building a very similar system?

Thanks.

I'm going witha similar system -- maybe you've seen my post on the General Information board.

AMD 600,
ASUS K7M w/a
Maxtor 27GB drive
...etc...

One question though -- I've ordered all of components already except for memory and Win98. Where did you buy your memory? I'm thinking 128MB of Crucial PC133 but would like to find something a little cheaper.

Funny, I'm upgrading from a P100 laptop that I spent over $3300 on. Ouch! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/icons/icon9.gif

Spartan,

I am just your average Joe who built a Pentium 120 about 4 years when they were hot. I figured it could not be too hard to do it again. I did a bunch of research online and decided to go with the following system

ATHLON K7 600
Asus K7M
13.7 Gig Maxtor (7200-rpm)
128 ram
Guillemot Xentor 32mb
The sound card is onboard and it works well.
The whole system was a snap; I had to download a PCI management BUS driver from the Asus web site because of a hardware error in windows.
I have been playing quake III and other big games it the system has preformed perfectly. The Guillemot card is great too, I am very glad I got that one!

It was a breeze from start to finish. Give me an email anytime if you need help.

Good luck!
