Im sure on a clean install of previous versions of XP pro that I have installed, the virtual memory size has always been set to system managed by default.

On my current install, the default setting was a custom setting and I noted the values down and set to system managed to see what the difference was.... Big Mistake! System seems to run like a dog, very slow and has major issues with lots of disk accessing although nothing running.

Went to change back to its original, as installed settings only to find the note pad entry with the settings on has been over written with a website address....WTF????

Any ideas what the settings may have been?

Its on my back up system but I would like it to run as quick as it was before.

AMD XP3200 64bit CPU
1.5gb ram
300GB HDD
160GB HDD
DVD multi drive
Nvidia 6800 ultra GPU
Abit mobo

TIA.

System Managed should work fine..But you can try 2megs for min and max.

I usually go with 1.0 times the systam RAM for minimum and maximum sizes.

1.5GB would be what I would use for both. This will reduce fragmentation of the swap file during use. With over 1.0GB of RAM, you could also drop that number down to 512MB for both settings and see if it boosts system response.

Thanks guys, will start low at 512mb and see what happens. Will increase to a max of 2gb if I have problems.
Will post back results.

Well, 512mb seems to have speeded it up somewhat and my disk access doesnt seem to be as crazy....still annoying though.

Will try 768 and 1024 and see what that does.

What are the pro's and cons of having too little or too much specified?

I have run out of virtual a couple times and lost what I was working on.

My c:\ IS 50 GB, SO I set it min 1,000 and max around 3000 and forget about it.

I was doing video work when I hit the wqll.
