Hi All!

Two parter here;

1. what is a decent ping for a dial-up 56k modem?

2. how do you come up with that number? When I ping, I type

ping -f -l xxx www.netzero.com (http://www.netzero.com)

xxx of course being the packet size I'm using to see if it fragments (say 576).

When you say sub 100 pings, what do you type to get this value? Is that the

time=100

in the results when you ping? On my dial-up, that value is in the
500-580 range. Is that what we're talking about here? Also, the TTL value I get when I ping, should I use that in my registry for TTL?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ping has little to do with the modem and a lot to do with the speed and distance of the internet route you're pinging. Ping your ISP's gateway and it should be quite fast - ping a distant site and it depends on how many routers it goes through and how much congestion there is.
