Hi

I tried to use new branded “R-Driver III” USB 2.0 TO SATA IDE CABLE device with Laptop HD IDE and Desktop HD IDE (once at a time) but it did not show me the HD , although I checked Disk Management (each one at a time)

I thought the problem with “ R-Driver III ”, about another one branded as Ritmo

Still the same problem is going on with both Hard Disks (external power source is used for 3.5 HD not 2.5,,,,,,,,I can hear spinning for 3.5 but not for 2.5)

I jumpered HD3.5 as master then slave,,,still I can not access it (although master/slave jumper settings might not come into play when we are using USB connections)

Both hard disks are working if I hook them into a computer

The device that I was talking about is same as in the link below

http://techacs.blogspot.com/2007/11/r-driver-iii-usb-20-to-sata-ide-cable.html

Any thought would be appreciated

Thanks

I'd normally use master or CS for a single drive. You wouldn't jumper a 2.5" drive in most cases.

Are these working drives you took from other systems?

So your G: drive is showing as a partition of the main drive? what does disk management look like without the USB adapter?

Yes.

You can not see the drive G.

So G: is part of your main drive? I see G: on Drive 0 in your disk management, but I don't see a file system on it. Is that a Linux partition or something?

Before the drives show up in disk management, they need to be in device manager. Do you see any errors there?

Sorry G is not the main drive. It is the external 3.5 HD (That my thread is about it) that is connected via USB TO SATA IDE CABLE

Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view. To customize how you view your disks and volumes in the upper and lower panes of the window, point to Top or Bottom on the View menu, and then click the view that you want to use.

Is that drive seen there?

If it is:

To view the properties of a partition or logical drive:

In the Disk Management window, right-click the partition or logical drive that you want, and then click Properties.
Click the appropriate tab to view the appropriate property.

What does it say?

Looking at the picture from post #2, G: is part of drive 0. see red areas of attached pic. If you remove the external does G disappear?

If the external drive is somehow overlapping drive letters with the G: partition on your main drive, that's an issue. you'll need to change the drive letter for one or the other.

Please post a screenshot of your device manager so that we can verify that your USB drive is installed.

Sorry Midknyte,,,,it was my mistake and I was totally wrong what I have said.

G is not the external HD 3.5 it is unformatted partition of the main HD ,,,,I though mistakenly it is 3.5 HD, but it is not.

My apologu for what I have written.

USB 2.0 TO SATA IDE CABLE

I would like to know where they came up with this technology?

Is it SATA or is it IDE? You can't have both at the same time.

USB 2.0 TO SATA IDE CABLE

I would like to know where they came up with this technology?

Is it SATA or is it IDE? You can't have both at the same time.

It is so that you can use either a Sata drive via usb, or the other adapter to use a normal ol fashion IDE drive via usb.

Pretty common these days, i've got a few lying around at work.:)

I tried the USB device and HD 3.5 on my friend's laptop and it worked fine without any problem.

His OS is XP , does not have any utilities installed on his laptop , unlike mine which I have got heaps of utilities.

Therefore he told that might be my problem,,,,Any input for such type of suggestion ?

Go into SAFE MODE, Device manager, Expand the USB.
Remove all instances of USB. When all are removed, reboot to windows.
The OS should pick the usb and install the drivers.

Had to do that last weekend to get rid of the multi installs that was messing things up.

Brilliant that solved the problem.

Thanks for that , I have been struggling for 0ne week to find out where is the problem.

Well, Safe Mode is the only place where you can see the extraq install that are causing the problems. But the only way you can correct it, is to remove everything.

It usually works as you found out, but once in a while . . . . :(

Glad to hear things are working like they should again and THANKS for posting back!

That's why I kept asking you about device manager. :p

Even safe mode may not be enough. You may need to view "phantom" devices also.

Train, I'm having the same problem that zillah is having with this adapter. I'm running xp sp3 on a dell dimension with everything up to date. regardless of everything i've tried i can not get windows to recognize 2 different internal hard drives (both working) and a cd burner. When you mention the word "instances" about usb in device manager, what exactly do u mean? When I go into my device manager and expand USB i have multiple host controller and root hub listing in the drop down. Your help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

i can not get windows to recognize 2 different internal hard drives (both working) and a cd burner.

Have you checked in the BIOS [also called setup] to see if they are picked up in there.
If you have a second IDE connector on the mobo [motherboard] , make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.

Then check in Disk management to see if it shows up there, if it does, enable it and it should then show up in My Computer.

Fact is go into Disk management, if you have a cd/dvd device already and change the drive letter to something like R:\ and try you hdd again.

I dont know if this thread is dead, or if anyone will respond to this, but i am new to all of this and I am having the same problem that Zillah was having, and i was wondering how would I "Remove all instances of USB" ibn safe mode?I went onto the safe mode, into device manager, but then i was stumped. sorry if this is an idiot request, but i have never done this.

PS: only my main hdd shows up in disk manager, and only the sata/ide cable shows up in device manager

The thread is over 6 months old, but the members should still be around.

First things first. Does the drive work when you connect it directly to a motherboard?

Johnos
11-19-2009, 09:33 PM
Yes, the IDE hdd does. Im not sure about the SATA because the laptop that was taken out of was water damaged. The IDE i have inserted into my laptop into place of my own hdd and it works fine.

If the SATA drive doesn't work via direct connect to a motherboard, then don't expect it to work on USB. Test that first.

As I said in post #16, you may need to use the phantom devices method to see all devices in device manager.

Oh right, I didnt realize that it had to be IDE if the laptop only had IDE connections. I can try it tomorrow on another computer that has a sata connection. But shouldnt the ide hdd work. I have it plugged in at the moment, and the drive is spinning, I can hear and feel it, but nothing is showing up on either device manager or disk managment.(except of course the exclamation marks.)
The exclamtion marks are named "Parport", "Serial", and "STDSB"

With regard to post 16, I did that and I found 3 items marked with an exclamation mark. I right-clicked and uninstalled the items, restarted the laptop, and reinstalled the drivers. When i rechecked for the phantom devices, the same three items were marked again.

If you can see the device in device manager, that is not a "phantom device". The device is seen if you can see exclamation marks. You mean that the device is not recognised properly. Did you install the drivers?

It would help if you gave details about the hardware and software. Make/model of the devices and which OS you are running would be a start.

ok, sorry about that, i should have started at the beginning. im running windows xp sp3. i got a usb to sata/ide cable from ebay. the only writing on the cable says ZILI(i dont think this is the brand name though. i googled it but got nothing) When i first plugged in the cable it installed drivers.

When i plug in the cable without any hard drive attatched, device manager picks it up as a mass storage device, and under disk drives it has usb to sata/ide usb device. When I then attatch the hard drive, nothing seems to change.

Again, I need to alpologize for misinformation. I have just checked phantom devoces with the cable unplugged the ones with the exclamation marks are still there, i had just assumed earlier that they were there because of the hard drive.
