all of a sudden my CD-rom will only play music CD's not data CD's. what happened? what can I do. I'm using windows 98 second edition, and I'm new to computing, so not too many big words :-)

Can you clarify that a little?

Do you mean that data cd's no longer start automatically, or what?

Just explain what's happening best you can & we'll translate it to the comp lingo & back to english again!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

when I put in any CD that is data, like my windows98 disk, or any CD-ROM, nothing happens, I can hear it spinning and stopping, try to do something, but nothing happens. when I put in a music CD it plays just fine.

What's most likely happened is that the Windows feature "autorun" has been disabled by some software. No big deal to fix, but will take a bit to explain step-by-step.
Don't be offended if I over-simplify!!
Things may vary slightly, the machine I'm on & refering to is running Win 95 instead of win 98. If at any point you want to back off, you can press "cancel" on each open window. to stop. Read all of this first. Won't make sense till you do it, but read anyway!

Click on the "Start" button in the lower left.
Move the cursor up to "Settings", then over to "Control Panel". Click.
Select the icon (picture of a computer) labeled "System". Double-Click.
Towards the top of this window you'll see "tabs", one of which is labeled "Device Manager" Select it & click.
Now you see a list of all devices within your computer.
One will be "CD-ROM", and will have a + sign next to it. Click on the +
Now you see the exact name of your CD drive. Select it, and double-click.
This opens the drive's "Properties" window.
On a tab, click on "Settings".
You'll see several options, the one we're concerned with is "Auto insert notification", which you want to be checked. If it's already checked, back out & come back here to tell us.
Click on the box to check it. As I recall, Win98 has two of these, one for music & one for data.

Now earlier I said you could cancel to quit. Beyond this point you're committed.
Press OK. That window closes.
Repeat pressing OK & closing.
You'll be prompted to restart. Do as it says.
Windows restarts, you're done.

Thanks a lot, but "auto insert notification is checked. I also checked for an IRQ conflict. I tried to boot from my start up disk, every thing went fine, it built me a generic driver, then said restating system and gave me a dos prompt A:\> and then it did nothing at allafter 11 minutes I restarted it normally.
Thanks alot for the spet by step I know a little, so you don't have to type so much.
I've tried a lot of places on the web your the best and nicest

Didn't mean to over do it on the steps. Just found that safer since you said you're new to this stuff! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Can you access the drive via Explorer, or can CD based programs run if started from the start menu?

I urned off the "DMA" didn't work.
I've tried other things also. I believe I need a driver.Anything else I could try?
Also while trying to solve my problem, I found out " setupx.dll" is corrupted.

A new rom drive may not solve your problem. If you know the rom model go get the drivers from their website. And youll need to find a program that will tell you what the corrupted dll is used for. Allthough I can assume that it involves direct x. You may need to reinstall Direct x if it does. Also as a last ditch effort click MY Computer Right click on your CD rom drive and click the open or explore option. Also check your Bios settings

Thanks for that info, I have direct X 7,I went through the DirectX diagnostics and all is well, should I reinstall anyway?
the company that made my CD-ROM no longer exists, I did try "WIN DRIVERS.COM" and a few other diver sites.
I don't have the money for a new CD-ROM drive right now, so any more info would be greatly appreciated.
I also tried to boot from from start up disk and use the generic driver but no luck.
Thanks again

Siamyc: May have missed something reading posts, but since audio CD's work, have you tried to go to " RUN", type 'E' or whatever your CDRom is, then /setup...OK and see if it would run then??? Since we all don't really use CdRom for data too much this might be a workaround til you get a new CD player. my player has funny days too, if you know what i mean. Good luck. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Hmm, lets see, about mid-january was the last time it worked properly.
I don't use it very often, so it might have been sooner, but I know for sure it worked after jan 1st, I did check for Y2k all during the first week of january. one day I had to restart my system because I ran "live update" for norton antivirus, and the printer was on, the problem started about then.
what do you think it is?

Hey thanks again everyone, I'm going to buy a new CD-ROM, but I haven't given up on finding a solution for the one I have now,it may be a week or two before I can buy a new one.
It was metioned that the new one may not work either, if that happens then what????
Also my PC says it can't find "autorun.exe"
can I make a copy of it on floppy ( from my sisters PC ) and reinstall it?
