Would an older (1997) external zip100 (Parallel port...yuk) slow down overall system performance on P2 & P3 systems? I was thinking of buying one off of a friend of mine for $30. Need it for Photoshop classes. Or should I just get a new internal?
Hello,
It will be slow comparing with your HD and you will notice that when you will try to copy data from or to the ZIP drive. Apart of that everything is fine, it won't slow down general performance of your system (if not in use) and do not forget - zip disks are relatively expensive.

Medo: you are right on the expensive part, I think the best price I was able to get was $27.00 at Computer Warehouse in Sacramento for three disk set. From there the price just goes up. I have both an internal and an external zip, they are slower than a hard drive but they don't hurt my performance. The external is a better deal because I can take it with me and use it on other computers. $30.00 is a good deal I paid over $100.00 for mine. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have an older parallel zip and I found it was a slug during copying but when not in use it didn't affect system performance. I found the transfer rate increased significantly after installing the latest Iomega drivers.

Great, thanks for the info. I just bought the drive from my friend this morning. Yeah, the disks are expensive, but it's mandatory for my classes. Well, off I go to install it. Thanks again.

Just installed it, launched the Parallel Port Accelerator...works great. Definitely worth the $30. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
