How many of you have bought a Nokia of late?

If, you have walked right past that row when visiting your local phone shop and plumped for a Blackberry or an iPhone instead, then you may be wondering how Nokia expects to maintain its 37% share of the world mobile phone market (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/Nokia-Profits-Slump-By-90-Mobile-Giant-Announces-First-Quarter-Figures/Article/200904315262970), as the company said today.

The Finnish firm's profit statement certainly shows that, despite its size, Nokia is not immune to the global recession. Net profit at the company came in at 122m euros for the first quarter- a staggering decline versus last year's 1.22bn figure - but a profit nonetheless. In a statement accompanying today's earnings, Nokia's CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo boasted that his company continued to invest in technology.

He and his colleagues are now pinning their hopes on a new music-playing 5800 XpressMusic model to compete with Apple's all-singing, all-dancing 3G phone.
Now, don't get me wrong - I am no technophile. But shouldn't Nokia, as "market leader", be leading the pack on technology instead of emulating its smaller competitors?

Those who held Nokia phones and stock alike remember how the company suffered for its reluctance to develop a clam-shell phone earlier this decade. But then again aren't Nokia's phones and shares synonymous with a certain Nordic reliability?
Yet whether Nokia likes it or not, mobile phones are as much about communication as they are about status and such instruments are likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.

A month ago when I went to trade in my Nokia 6500, the decision was already made in my mind. The new device would have to be either "functional" and allow me to check my emails or "funky" with music and video features I can show off to my friends.
There are many addictions in this world but the average mobile phone user is either hooked on the internet or music and sometimes to both.

Should Nokia invent a new product that can cater to both and invest in some jazzy marketing, maybe it could find a lucrative gap in the market.

I bought Nokia last year :)

Blah blah blah. I just want a phone that will let me talk to people and is reliable. I don't want to text ( I didn't buy a phone to type at people, I wanted to TALK to them ) I don't care if I can take pics or play music either. I like my now aging Motorola, but I have never texted on it, taken 2 pictures and don't listen to music on it. Oh well.

F'ing up the perfectly setup GSM...... Ya wants clever fones .... Go to Japan, theys got super fast broadband to tha fones & everything ........ Makes us lot look like amateurs..... & tha yanks look like a crowd of Wieners ........ However they might have a point there ;)

I guess not, but I also don't want to pay charges for services I'm not going to use. If I don't want texting, don't be billing me for the ability to do it. Bill the jerks who do use it. Don't bill me for internet and email I won't use either.

Then again, I want ala carte cable or satellite service and we knows they won't do that either.

They don't come that one here ....... All I pay for is what I use.... & ya don't have to pay to receive calls/txt's/faxes/pickkies either...... its PAYG (http://www.02.com/)(Pay as you go) & its cheaper for me to call you than it is for me to call across the road ,,,,,, Why I dunno, but it is ...... We have a brilliant cellular network ..... Which is odd really ........ Unless yas goes 3G .... Thats still pretty poor ...... But 3G is overpriced shineola anyways, 2G+GPRS is just as good...... Just no vision will calls...... BIG WUP I say :t

Sounds good to me Murph. It stinks the way the big companies are stiffin us on that sort of stuff. I get charged a flat rate for cable, Yas got these channels, yas pay this much. What gets me ticked is that I don't want a majority of those channels but to see the ones I do want, I has to pay for the package. I don't want the golf channel, or mtv/vh1, etc. But there they are. I want to pay for just the ones I'll watch. Same with the phone. Why should I pay for stuff I don't use? Make it so that them that uses it pays, not all of us. My phone has a camera. They told me that I'd have to pay for emailing the pics to my computer so I could see them. What kind of carp is that? I just connect the usb cable to the phone and copy them over, no charge that way.

Yeah ..... I bloo toof stuff about ......... If I can be acred a waitin' ......... Failin' that its usb ...... I don't bother with subscription TV. I have Satellite receivers & I have a cable hook up. I never bothered to get a cable box & I ditched my motorised Sat hookup a while back ..... Cos even when I was gettin' stuff that pplz usually have to pay for (Legally.... You can't steal tv signals here..... No such law) I didn't watch it........ About the only thing thats worth paying for is the F1 channel (Which shut down years ago) & comedy TV: otherwise known as Fox News :D ...........

We gots Digital TV service its all Free to air (bout 70 chanels I think) ...... Theres a lotta caulk broadcast ..... But the TV has a fully functioning Off button, so no panic :t

I'm not interested in talking to people by tapping keys. Telegraph is so 1800s. I don't care for the other **** either. I don't even really like talking to people, so they can wait until I get home. Situation solved, and I save some serious money too.

We're slowly switching to all digital, just some are whining about it yet. I have cable but I think it's carp to bundle all the garbage that no one wants to watch in with the stuff the do watch and make them pay for it. There is a push to get ala carte so we can ditch the carp channels. I'd rather have satellite, but it's the same thing there. Just a bit cheaper. Tech supports better though. Biggest problem for me with Sat. right now is that my place is on the wrong side of the building to get a signal and the landlords don't approve of poking large holes for coax in the walls and roof :(

j.m@talk
04-16-2009, 06:50 PM
The landlord can ferk ourf ;) ............. You would be surprised as to what can be done with dishes, like mounting them on poles to peek over roofs, or bolt em to out buildings or even @ floor level ....... If yas really clever you can mount them on their backs on a flat roof so they can't be seen from the ground at all :D ...... Mines a mesh one mounted on a gable end & is hiding just below the roofline, but high enough to just & I mean Just have enough elevation to catch tha rays maaaaaan ...... It was that of have the thing slap bang on the front of the house (Front is south facing ya see) ..... & I didn't fancy that ..... They ain't too pretty........ My directional one was transparent plastic (Had fine wires in the plas) worked a treat & costa bomb ....... I've sold on now tho' :t

Sat does get a bit ifi with heavy rain & fog unless its sized properly (Free shizz is usually pretty poor I find) ....... Ala carte would be ok ..... They would stick a minimum # of chanels you must have on it tho ........ Prolly summink like 520 ;)

The analogue signal is being switched of in November this year in my area ....... Grannies & the disabled can cop a free Set top Box if they moan to the right gov't dept ...... I'm gonna have to put in for one for mummy ;)

They dont mind sat dishes here, there's a few around, just I'm on the NORTH side of the building. Not good for sat reception.

Don't matter anyhow if I get my act together and move west ;)

Cell cheaper than land line? My land line's only $27 a month. Cell was more than double that when I told them to cram it. Happy with the current setup. No one can bother my reverie when I'm out for a walk or a swim.

I don't get bothered either, the cell phone has an OFF button ;)

I use it frequently.

I use my landline more than the cell though. I have free unlimited long distance on the land line. Why use the cell for long distance? I only use it for travel

j.m@talk

Why use the cell for long distance?

I have a "International Bolt on" £7 one off payment makes international calls the same price as national calls....

I get free national calls from my home address, or very close to with cell. (As long as I charge the account with £10 per month)

The land line is £10 a month + calls or so (Ya get some free shizz at week ends..... I can't remember what I bought)

Looks like we get a better cell deal than you chaps & you's may pip us with land line charges ........ :-@

During deep sleep IT came to me and the future of processing is clear. Some will consider this a message from on high, others will be strapping rubber to walls, the informed will be adjusting stock portfolios, the technical will be agog, warfare will transform and technology in general - progress through the greatest leap ever. l can advise you of the matter but must then kill you. So... consider yourself deceased. rip. Ahem. Future processors will primarily be digital tuning radios acting as grid computing nodes. Voila. See ya in hell.
