I've ran across this issue a couple times w/ XP. A friend has dial up CompuServe internet service. Once in a while she will muck things up & I'll have to bring that computer home & up date files or need to down load a utility to run. I plugged in 2 separate wireless adapters & see my connection @ home but XP will not let me connect. Says something like it's a shared point access, I need to change the order of preferred networks. I've been in out of the properties box's 20 times but still can't figure it out. XP does not make it easy. I did a clean install of XP & it picks up the wireless adapters no problem. Only prob w/ that is my friend is SERIOUS ocd & is afraid to loose all her CompuServe data & old files. I finally just got a long cat 5 cable & ran it directly to my router & was able to do all the updates I needed. Is there a n easier way or has someone had similar issues?

could you provide the exact error?
I'm guessing you are using USB wireless adapters. Are you using the manufacturer's wifi client or the windows wireless zero config service?
What XP SP level is on your friend's computer? That makes a big difference. You should be at least at SP2 if not SP3.

SP 3 using windows default connection. the problem is not the adapters , they see my router fine but XP will not let me connect. I'm thinking it's something w/ the TCIP settings. IDK

What security settings are you using on the router?

"something like it's a shared point access," sounds like the the dialup connection is being shared (ICS), which will set the IP address of the wireless to 192.168.0.x. Before it can aquire an address on your network, it may be necessary to set the adapter to "Obtain an IP address automatically", or just temporarily disable ICS on the dialup adapter.
On the other hand, if she is using ICS, her network may show up in your "available wireless networks", and you could connect directly that way.
