Greetings, I have resolved this problem but it is so bizarre that I thought that I would post it so that anyone who runs into it again can resolve it reasonably easily. I have installed "lots" of software on this pc and never had a problem like this one.
The Environment.....WinNt4.0, Sp6a, Pentium 6 200mhz, 64mb memory, Adaptec 2940 U2W scsi controller, 1 2.5mb scsi and 1 4.6mb scsi hard disk, 1 (newly installed) HP9210i cd burner.
The Scenario.... Having installed a CD burner I was in the process of installing Adaptec's Easy CD Creator software when I encountered this severe error... "General File Transfer Error #3". My only option was to quit the installation. The last file that the setup program was copying when the failure occurred was the cdrmmc.drv.
The solution.... after many failed installation attempts and several calls to HP support I changed the installation path from "C:\Program Files\Easy CD\" to "C:\Program Files\Cd". For some reason the Setup or installation program did not like something in the path.
If you have had the same problem and have been able to find the root cause, please let me know what you found as I suspect that the path change is a "work around" rather than a solution.
