Using a camcorder to capture video feed to cpu

hi everyone,
i have had some serious problems with theft in the house i live in, and wanted to use some sort of camcorder outside that can turn on when someone walks by. also, because this is a camcorder, not one of those computer cameras, how would i (and what do i need to) connect and record this video.

any tips or setups that you guys have would be appreciated!

i'd recomend buying an x10 unit,it's wireless and can be hooked up to a vcr or a computer if you have a capture card,and their is software..i believe smith micro that has a feature that detects movement and either makes a short clip or takes a pic you can get an x10 unit at
