I think I just had my hard drive fail. See "clunk" message. I definitely have a metalic ping sound coming from the hard drive. The Quantum tech support guy indicated that it could be a software issue. I don't think so. He said to unplug the HD and if the sound did not continue then it would be software. I doubt this?? However here are the questions:
Sometimes it will start up and it will get as far as the win98 splash screen. (sometimes not that far)
Sometimes it will run scandisk and then hang.
Sometimes it hangs during scandisk.
When you boot the machine, when does the OS get loaded? prior to spash screen? after? What order does hardware get recognized (or is that dependent upon bios?) I can get into set up and the HD is recognized.
The machine will now hang at the splash screen and the hard drive does the metalic ping.
