I've just added a second hard drive to my system. All is OK, but the automatic drive-letter assignment is kind of annoying.
Both drives are IBM 34GXP 20.1gb
Drive 1: four partitions
Currently assigned as:
C:
E:
F:
G:
Drive 2: two partitions
D:
H:
The drives are routed through a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card. I've set the BIOS to boot from this ('SCSI' option).
I'd prefer the 1st drive to be C,D,E,F with the 2nd as G and H.
Motherboard is an FIC PA-2013 with K6III 450.
Is there any way this can be achieved?
Thanks
Rob

Rob-
Fdisk will do it. I would try to delete the logical drive G: and then check to see if that reassigns them correctly if not then delete D: and check again ect.. till it's assigned to your specs.

If your OS is NT you might get somewhere using Disk Administrator. I don't think you can switch using Win95/8.
I believe you can change drive letters at will using Partition Magic, but other members might have better suggestions for you.

If you're running 98, go to device mgr. With two HD's you should be able to change it there. DrVette

Actually unless I'm mistaken, on a system with more than one hard drive and more than one partition on each drive, the primary partition drive letters are assigned first with the extended partitions following them. In WinNT this can probably be changed with the Disk Administrator but as far as I know with Win95/98 it can't.
Use FDISK and make all partitions on 2nd drive extended partitions, do not make a primary partition on 2nd drive. then it will look like this...
Drive 1=C: D: E: F:
Drive 2=G: H:
depending on how many partitions you make.

Bear has hit and Answer right on! Anytime you set a 2nd harddrive up and NOT configured the drive/partitions as extended it will always take the next drive letter.
