I have a soyo 6vba 133 mobo, p3450, sb live, viper770 ultra, netgear nic, diamond modem, scsi cdr, dvd, 192 ram, running triple boot w2k, w98, linux. Everything works fine except in w2k I get somewhat frequent bsod's which state something about irq problems. No conflicts are shown but I noticed that my nic and vid card are both using irq 11 in but I cant seem to change the settings, as they are greyed out. Also usb and scsi are using irq 10. I have irq's 2,4,7,8,9 free and would like to use them instead of sharing. Anyone know how to switch them?

Did you remove the check in the box for Use Automatic Settings. After it's gone the Change Setting button and the Setting Based on boxes will usually be active.

Use automatice settings box is checked, but greyed out. I can't uncheck it.

Bdog:

Have you checked your BIOS to see if you can manually assign IRQ's there? I can't remember for sure, but I think some BIOS's I have seen would let me manually assign the IRQ for one particular PCI slot and let the PNP system do the rest. If it does not permit that, then your job is harder, I think, because you have to then assign every IRQ yourself and can't count on Windows to deal with that for you.

I hope that helps.

You can also try moving your nic card to a different slot.

Check the BIOS for a setting to the effect of Assign IRQ for VGA also in the Device Mgr. under System Devices->PCI Bus Properties->Settings Tab be sure that it is Use Hardware that is checked. Under IRQ Steering if the Get IRQ table using ACPI BIOS is checked remove that as well If none of those suggestions are helpful post again and I will look for the Registry Key that allows you to reenumerate all devices,

Thanks for the replies. I have been shuffling my pci cards around and fiddling with my BIOS settings for a couple of hours now. I managed to free up the sharing of the USB and SCSI but the NIC and Vid card insist on using the same IRQ. I am scared to boot into linux. After all that card swapping and bios changes, there is going to be one confused penguin. Here is a more detailed layout of the cards:

AGP > viper 770 irq 11
pci 1 > nic irq 11
pci 2 > scsi irq 5
pci 3 > sb live irq 9
pci 4 > empty
pci 5 > empty
isa > modem irq 3

Please help me find a way to get either the nic or video on another irq. I am getting frequent lockups ans network is super slow.

U might want to try moving NIC to a different slot. For some motherboards, AGP and PCI slot 1 shares the same IRQ. Also, if your out of IRQ's it doesn't hurt to disable stuff like serial ports u don't use.
