I really have no idea about this stuff, except i do know that my guy built me a system using the cheapest possible stuff.
I know you guys have lives of your own....but if i bought one of the upgrades at ditcorp...what should i buy, and what exactly would i have to do to get it all pulled together? The prices look great and I got a $7300 tax check sooo...
I have a Daytek monitor, it's fine, my speakers are fine, could use a new keyboard and mouse but can buy those locally...i have an Epsom 600 printer, it's fine too.
Rather than having to set things up myself, i would like to just replace the tower and have it all ready to plug in...would that be silly or do i have things from this system that i should save? especially the memory..since i upgraded it from 32 to 64, although i only paid $50 for the extra?
HELP!!!
It looks like all you want to salvage is the ram. If you don't know what kind you have, we need the processor/motherboard info, unless you have something that indicates what speed and type it is.
If you know what processor you have, that will help.
It would really be better to buy something from a local shop with a good reputation so you have someone to go to. They may be able to use a lot of what you already have. Be sure to let them know what your intended use is for it, that should be among their first questions to you.
As far as pre-built systems go, Dell and Gateway are top-rated. Compaq is available thru Radio Shack.
The problem with Dell, Gateway and Compaq comes down the road when you want to upgrade and have to go back to them for their proprietary parts. Then you buy a new one again.
Many of us who post here bought pre-built systems the first time, then got wise and built our own. That's not for everyone tho.
Good luck and do check back with us!

If I had a check like that coming, which will never happen, I would donate my computer to a school for a tax credit and get me a brand spankin' new Athlon 1GHZ with all the trimmings, find a storm shelter with all the ammenities and retreat form the real world http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Lol, I don't get to keep the tax check! Just some of it, DH has a '67 Chevelle that needs a paint job and about a million other things to do with the money!
I just stopped at a local shop, one that's been there for a while. I talked with a lady there and was very impressed.
She said that the Cyrix processor can have troubles and when it does it is usually bad....she also reccommended a case fan plus a better processor fan.....she told me that if I upgraded, because I have the VA-502 motherboard i wouldn't be able to use it and because the system was built two years ago that my RAM probably isn't saveable, because of the DIMMs.
She gave me an estimate of around $300-400 to upgrade the motherboard, processor and RAM, plus put a case fan in and a new processor fan. I don't think i want to dump that much into this system.
I am going to go ahead and go to my original guy, replace the processor fan, put in a case fan, check out the power supply and add some ports.
He kinda owes me after all the trouble with this system, plus he flirts outrageously with me and if I sweet talk him he does it for next to nothing(ah the benenfits of being a woman, lol! and yup, I am not a feminist)
So i will band-aid this one up for this year and buy a new one next year.
Thanks for all the help, you guys are great!

Yes I am pretty sure I saw that you motherboard did support an AMD K6 2-300.
I wish I kept my chevelles.I had three(and two Toyotas)before I moved out of state. I had a 68',69' and 74'The 74' was tricked out ran uper 12's-lower 13's in the 1/4. People always wanted to race that thing. It looked like a pice of junk cause it needed a paint job. The 69' had a 250cu" 6 in it that had a little work done also. It ran uper 13's. The 68' was a rust bucket hit a speedbump one day and the gas tank fell out.Used some a/c staps and resuported it.

LOL! sounds like the way we fix things around here sometimes.
It used to be a really funky color green and right after we started dating a storm hit and a tree fell on it, so he got the damage repaired and painted it red.....then we moved in together, had babies and it has sat ever since.
He runs a big block in it, can't remember what but it has been out for the last two years, a friend runs it in his pulling tractor...he is getting it redone and getting the car painted so he can cruise with it and take it to local car shows.
There were many, many times over the years when cash flow was non-existent and he thought he should sell it and sometimes i did too, but we have three boys..13, 11 and 5 1/2 months and we always wanted to save it for them.
I am going in the morning to do the computer so i will ask him, hope i dont offend him, lol! How do you say, this is a piece of **** so lets fix it and still get him to do all the freebie stuff for ya?

I want to see pics of the Chevell after it is painted! That paint job may just run just about what your return is. I am a chevlle nut and maybe one day I will find another one at a good price.68' being my favorite year.
I would go ahead and put a K6 2-266 or 300($30 or $40) in it if you are going to keep it another year. The Cyrix has lots of problems from what I have read.

So I can just have him change out the processor for and I can buy it that cheap?
Will take some before and after pics of the Chevelle once i get the camera up and running.
He has had the car since he was 18!
