Building a new PC, but can't get the floppy drive to work. I have checked connections etc flipped the cable various ways etc, but still no avail. I do notice that when I put the cable on "backwards" in the back of the drive that the drive light comes on and stays solid - which I read means the cableis on backwards. But is does not boot up when it is on corectly. CMOS seems to see it, and the boot sequence is A: first. Going to go buy an new drive, but wanted to see if the solid light indicating the backwards cable was a sign of life and a misconfig or the drive is just dead. (The floppy is from an old machine - last I checked they worked there).

Is your NIC in the machine if so remove it and attempt to get the machine to boot correctly. Be sure that the cable is twisted at the 10th through 16th pin so that the pins read 1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4 5-5 6-6 7-7 8-8 9-9 10-16 11-15 12-14 13-13 14-12 15-11 16-10 17-17 18-18 and so forth until pin 34 connects to pin 34 and that the cable is intact and in good shape I went to through two mother boards trying to install with numerous older floppy drives and cables that weren't in the best condition and couldn't find the problem. In addition to substandard hardware the NIC had been misconfigured and installed before I really needed it in the machine. But after 90% information you didn't ask for here is the 1% you wanted: Yes, when the cable is reversed you will see a constant light on, as opposed to the light blinking once at the POST when configured correctly
