Building new system, couple questions about the Hard Drives.

I just put together a new system, an ATHLON K7 600 on an Asus K7M with 13.7 Gig Maxtor and an older 2 gig from my old computer. I am now trying to figure out what the best way to go in terms of setting up the Drives.

The system works fine now, it boots off of my old drive (WIN 98) and I have the 13.6 set up as the Slave and the CD-ROM is set as the secondary slave. However, I would like to primarily use the 13.6 all of my applications and Os, but have the 2 gig as a back up for important stuff.

Therefore, how can I get the system to boot from the new 13.7 gig, and how can I put the Os on the new 13.7.

You could get a third HDD ..doesn't need to be more than 500 meg to a gig Install Norton Ghost on it and copy an image from the 2 gig to the 13 gig and go from there. You may not even need the third just get NG and your problem are no more.

The new maxtor should have come with a disk that I have used many times to my satisfaction. Before you put anything on the new drive you can install it as the secondary...then boot to the floppy. It will ask if you would like to copy the contents of your original drive onto the new one. After that is completed, just switch the jumpers to make you new drive the master and you are on your way!

Maxtor made it real easy to do. I believe you can even have the new drive partitioned if you already have stuff on it, and the utility will allow you to copy the old drive to your new partition and then make that part. active so you can still boot from it.

Good luck. Probably can get the utility from Maxtor if it didn't come with the drive.

Just a thought but, why not start with a fresh OS install? It will run faster and be less buggy in the end.

Set your new HD to Master on IDE1 and the old HD as Master IDE2 along with CD as slave IDE2. Newer drives are faster and it's better to keep them alone on an IDE slot.

After your OS and Program installations, you will still have all your old files on the old drive.

There's no loss in data, but it's a bit time consuming reinstalling all the programs. Worth the extra effort in my opinion.
