I took a quick look at an Iomega Prestige 500G Ext HD drive today. ***This is NOT an endorsement.*** I just wanted to post this info, since you rarely see this stuff in an official "review".
Disassembly is a piece of cake. There are two screws on the back (no "warranty void if removed" labels). Remove the screws and just slide off the metal shell. WAY easier than disassembling a Western Digital or Seagate Ext drive. Inside, we found a Seagate 7200.11 drive.
Depending on where you get it, it may be CHEAPER than buying an internal SATA drive. My friend got his at "Buy More". The Seagate internal SATA 500G was $20 MORE than the Iomega external. The only problem is that it has a 1 year warranty versus 5.
$20+Enclosure or 5 year warranty. You decide. Obviously, we went for the enclosure and cash. :)
Pros: Seagate drive, easy to disassemble
Cons: 1 year warranty, short USB cord (2'?), thin power adapter cord
