My 3.5 floppy drive suddenly stopped working. I always downloading stuff from the internet so could it be a configuration problem...or is it just dead? It is only a little over a year old so hopefully not. Any ideas what I can do to try to solve this problem? Thanks

HI jstst23,
Does it read disks? Write to them? Show up in Explorer? Show up in DOS?....if no then does it show up on bootup?

When I restart the computer it does not detect the "A" drive. However, in explorer the A drive is present. When I try to access files on the A drive it says the A drive is not accessable. Thanks Jeremy.

Double check your data cable connections/power connection. Also double check your settings in the bios for the floppy. (if you are sure of both of these things..the easiest and pretty cheap fix is replace it. (12-15 bucks)

ps. Double check your device manager for problems with the floppy disk controller too.

It's not listed in the device manager.

With it NOT being listed in the device manager I would double check the connections and the bios again....Then boot into windows and then have it do a hardware search. If it doesnt find the floppy disk controller or the floppy disk I would start to say you have a wasted floppy controller. (Time for a RMA if the board is still under warranty)

Under system properties-performance it says that drive A is using MS-DOS campatibility mode file system. What is an RMA? Could you explain what you meant in your last post? Thanks a lot.

RMA is a Return Material Authorization. BUT you dont need one with what you also stated in your last post.

MS-DOS compatablity...The drivers for the floppy controller are messed up. you need to delete those drivers and install the correct ones

I don't think that I have the drivers for the floppy. Would they be included in the Windows 98 CD? Thanks for your help.

Yes most likely you will have the correct drivers on the Win98 cd http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I went inside the case to find the brand name and model number. I disconnected and reconnected the cable and power supply and now it works. Thanks for everything.
