A friend of mine just bought a COMPAQ Presario 5800 series computer. We kept getting errors and during the scandisk process we found one bad sector . This is the first time I have seen bad sectors on the new hard drives unless it is going bad. Anyone else had these problems with a new computer especially COMPAQ?

Have never personally owned a Compaq, but have installed 2000 at a time for a project at work. Several of them were bad, or had bad components, right out of the box...
If its new as you say, or is still under warranty, even though its only one bad sector, I would ask for a replacement.

I am going to wait and see if I get anymore bad sectors. Since we have a case number on the problem it has been noted. The warranty is good for a year. I remember on some of the old drives it was not unuaual to have bad sectors. I just have not seen any on the new drive. Thanks for the reply
I'd not stand for a bad sector new out of the box - they can send you a new drive or a new CPU - don't allow them to lull you into accepting this state of affairs - get them to replace the drive or replace the system and pay for the shipping.
Whether or not it's a big deal for you - you got damaged goods.

I agree with Axel your friend has damaged goods. I would get a replacement as soon as I could. The Compaq warranty isn't the best in the west so get it replaced while you still can.
