System: Abit BH6 (flashed to NV) - Celeron 300a - Sis APG Vid - 64 meg pc100

SO after a year and a half running at 374MHZ, I had an Explorer crash and when I rebooted, the system would not post..Only beep repeatedly until I turned off the power. If I try within a couple minutes, same thing beep beep beep .... SOOO here's the mystery....If I wait a good hour or two and then boot, 9 times out of 10, I have boot success. But if I power down the system and try to reboot..beep beep beep. I sick of waiting hours upon hours to get my system up. Yes I have reseated everything on the motherboard. The only time it won't beep is if I take out the CPU (but won't post without CPU. I been all over the newsgroups reading about this problem but have found nothing to explain this sudden problem. Any suggestions? New CPU, Motherboard, and/or memory?

I'm leaning toward a conclusion that the memory is bad, and likely over-heating.

Bad memory would explain the beeps and no post, and having to wait for a long time before it can be powered up sounds to me like a cooling problem.

If you have another stick of RAM to try, I'd give that a whirl and see if your issue goes away.

If not, then we can begin to look at the CPU and Motherboard Chipset as possible over-heating candidates as well.

BTW, that celeron 300a should be able to do 450Mhz with the proper cooling http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

If it was bad memory, wouldn't it post if I took it out? In this case it doesn't.

Nope..... if you remove the memory, it will not post.

On the boards i've worked on, if the RAM is not installed or seated properly, it seems like a bad vid card. You hear your drive(s)
spinning and lights blinking but no display.
So i'm not sure if it posts, I can't see nothing.

Yes...but when it doesn't post and there's nothing on the video, I still get the repeated beep, beep, beep. If it was posting without the vid, it wouldn't be beeping. Why does it need to sit for hours before powering on?

Just a thought, have you got a different power supply you could try? It could be getting to hot in one or more of the components and not giving you the correct voltage??

The power supply dosen't feel hot but that's a very good thought. I will give it a try!

An Abit BX6 that I worked on made continuous piercing beeps when I booted up without memory.
