Help !!! My PC won't boot. I recently upgraded the BIOS on my PC
and attempted to add extra memory (2 SIMMs)(Bank 1). When the PC
booted up, the BIOS did not recognize the extra memory. So I took
the old memory out from its bank (bank 0) and put the new memory in
its place. Since then the PC will not boot. As soon as it is turns
on, it keeps beeping (a beep every 2 seconds). I put the old memory
back in its original place and tried to boot. Still does not boot.
On a friend's suggestion I pulled all the cables out and put it in to
secure tight connections. Still does not boot.. The MB manufacturer
(Spring Circle) is no longer in business and the MB - ST 586 Rev. P550
does not seem to have any diagnostic manual. Any Help or insight is
appreciated. I am a newbie to the ugrade world and could use all the
help... THANKS !!!!

Go back to the old RAM - make sure it seats properly in the banks - take out the new stuff - then you want to set your BIOS settings back to default and try to boot again.

Do a search on this board for beep codes -there was a post a few months back with several good links defining what each beep code means.

Push on that ram hard!!! If it is SDRAM
it is really hard to get it in all the way.
If its simms change em around to different sockets,Also try to clear the bios and then try to boot it.

You might also check the memory contacts on the MB as well as the ram and make sure none of them got damaged.

What susan said about bent pins, unless you got super eyes you'll probably need a small magnifier and at least a small flashlight. Look in the slot where the ram seats for misaligned pins. On seating the new ram, I've had to use something behind the motherboard to keep it from flexing too much. Some of it takes 20+lbs to seat. I used newspaper behind it to back it up. GLuck Take me to your leader.

Sounds like it would be easier to boot it if it were on the ground

(2 SIMMs( (Bank 1) ..hmmm? You do not need to press hard to seat this kind of memory - just make sure you have the notched end lined up in the proper direction, insert it fully into the slot at a 45* angle, and flip it up into the retaining tabs.

I think you are running into a compatibility problem. Not all SIMMs are created equal. There are different kinds of memory and I think the memory you are trying is not compatible with your system. This is quite common with older systems and especially IBM and Compaq systems.

The other thing is that the SIMMs in Pentium class systems need to be matched - are they the same type, speed, and size?
