so If I have a 2x by 2x by 4x I can only use cd-r cd's. Everything else like a cd-rw wont work?

have you checked the manufacturers webpage for info on the cd r?

Rock, your drive writes on 2x, rewrites on 2x and read on 4x speed by the numbers, strange, the current ones go like 8/4/32 or like this. Your one may be an older one , which manufacturer and model?
