Okay, I'm really showing my naivitae here... But, with a CD r/w,

1. can you play dvd's, or do you need a dedicated player, and

2. either way, can you copy a dvd even if you can't play it?

Hmmm

Obviously I don't have a clue...

Thanks in advance.

currently, most of the public cannot afford the equipment needed to burn a DVD - you cannot do it with a CDRW - vastly different burning technique - regardless - you won't be burning dvd's on a home PC for a few months at least and it will be extremely expensive.

I have heard of people copying movies to their hard drives as AVI files and burning CD's with AVI files - took several CD's for a pirated copy of star wars episode 1 I heard existed, but I don't think any DVD was involved.

1. a regular CD or CDR/rw player/burner cannot read DVD's http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
2. A standard DVD movie is around 4.3 gigs in size so the 'simple" answer is NO.

Yes there are several ways "around" the copying of DVD's. (several websites have been issued court papers to stop it so I will not discuss it on this forum)

Your best bet is to buy a DVD player (pioneer is the best IMHO and can be had in the 6x or 10x model for under 100 bucks...btw they will play your regular cd's and cdr's just fine http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif )

grandslammer,
you need to get a DVD-RAM or DVD-RW to burn DVDs. dont buy either yet though. THere is a battle to see which one will come out on top. Think of it as VHS vs beta way back when. you dont want to get stuck with the one that will be phased out.

so far there are no industry wide standards regarding burning dvd's...check out www.cdpage.com (http://www.cdpage.com) for more information about cd's and dvd's

CL sells a dvd-ram drive for about $270. The blank media is around $40.

Thanks all, I appreciate the input. Guess I'll wait. Don't need another betamax sitting in my living room(or my closet-HA!)

How about that. Monica Lewinski is losing weight since she has to stay away from Slik Willy. Huh... Wonder if there's any connection there!!!!!!!!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ;0 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

like mntsnow said there are ways around this but it is far to troublesome and the quality sucks. there are programs out there that will compress the vcd or whatever files to mpeg and even this is quite a large file and the quality is pretty bad. dvd's are actually pretty cheap now(order on line and you can find the popular one for dirt cheap) so I think it is actually cheaper to go out and buy them. I'd post the link for the compression utility but I can't remember exactly and the moderators would probably frown upon it. good luck http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
