Here's the scenario:
-Two laptops
-One running Windows Vista, the other one running Windows XP.
-No router. Ethernet cable going directly from the modem to the laptop being used.
-Modem and Internet service work. Called the cable company and they said everything looks good.
-Ethernet cable is brand new. Replaced the old one just in case.

Whenever I plug the ethernet cable in the laptop running Vista, I get a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to the system clock telling me that there is limited connectivity. I checked the properties for IPv4 and IPv6 and both are set to obtain IP and DNS automatically. When I run ipconfig, there is no default gateway. I tried unplugging the power cord from the modem and plugging it back in after a while and that didn't solve the problem. I tried disabling Windows firewall and that also didn't help. Norton Internet Security was installed in the system but I ran Norton's removal tool and restarted to no avail. Called the cable company, they walked me through a bunch of steps (mostly everything I had already done) and I still couldn't get the computer to connect. I cannot ping a website or ip address. Now here's the annoying part... If I plug the ethernet cable in the computer running Windows XP, it works right away. And, if I connect the laptop running Windows Vista to a different Internet connection (my friend owns the laptop running Vista and he has cable, I own the laptop running XP and I have DSL), it works right away.

Could you guys enlighten me here as to what can be wrong with the Vista laptop? It is definitely not the modem or Internet connection and I ran out of ideas as to what could be wrong. Thank you.

have you enable Internet connection sharing?

You need a Cable/DSL Router.

The whole thing should look like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

Example, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156038
.

Ditto on adding a router to your network!

Plugging a system directly to your modem is asking for a virus to attack you.

The difference between Cable and DSL, if you don't have a router, is that you have to create a PPPoE connection.
