formating/removing files on a 5.2 gig hard drive

I have tried using a Windows 95 startup disk to format my 5.2 gig drive by using (format c http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. Each time it does about 10% then quits.
I would really like to know how to format it although I am mainly interested in just cleaning off all the files on the disk.
Would a (format c: /q) do that for me on the 5.2 gig dirve?
