i'm not quite sure why it's decided to do this. both of the previous times i've installed on the same system it's worked perfectly. I know that nothings wrong with the card or with the connection because i've hooked up my laptop and the computer with win2k can still see everything on the network!?!? hmmm... thanks for the help

Humm...strange then...sorry that I couldn't help...maybe some else will have some more ideas. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
did ya designate a gateway? How are you recieving your ip? static, dynamic? If you do a winipcfg does it show the correct ip? Can you ping the dns servers? can you ping the gateway? Windows may have assigned its own ip and wont release it. Is tcp/ip bound to the adapter you will use to access the internet? Let me know more and I will try and help.

No wonder I don't get any replies! I thought it was supposed to be in Networking?
Why would I put a network question there? No one ever goes there.

How are you connecting to the Internet through your network? Is it by proxy? On my laptop with Win2k I had to specify the DNS addresses of my ISP before I could use the web. I'm using SyGate for the ICS.

i have a dynamic ip that is given to me each time i turn on my computer. I have no designated gateway, but in the past and on my other two computers i dont need this. There doesn't seem to be the winipcfg program in Win 2000 Pro so i'm not sure if it won't let go or what. It's worked before, argh, why can't i get it to work again?

Hmmmm. Well with you mentioning that it's a cable like connection at your dorm do you have the GATEWAY configured to the IP addy that the college IT dept should have given you?.....Sorry if I'm a bit slow today. I have yet to get to sleep since work yesterday http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Ok...trust me...I don't care if you can see the other computers or not...it is a simple fact of manually setting the primary and alternat DNS server addresses. Windows NT ( NT4 or W2K ) both require this, Win9x does not...
Even if the PC is a client, you must set the DNS server IP that the proxy server uses (look in it's ipconfig for the server ip's)
Do not set DNS ip's to any local ip you have.
You can have the DHCP enabled or not, but the DNS ip's have to be set! Period.
I can say no more about that...it's the truth!
To acess the setting...right click on my net places...then select properties....then select Local Area Connection...then select properties...then highlight the TCP/IP protocol and select it's properties...
You will see 2 sets of radio buttons...select the lower one of the bottom set...it says Use the following DNS server....
Here is where to enter the setting.
Now, a hardware issue can also cause these kinds of things.

BBA-
how can i tell what to put in the Preferred DNS server spot and in the Alternate DNS server spot? I'm very thankful for this help
-pollux
mntsnow, don't worry buddy... i have those days all the time http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
If you can give me the actual internet IP to your proxy server I can find your DNS server for you.
Or, if you have any Win9x machine connected to it, you can look at the Win9x PC's ipconfig by typing "WINIPCFG /ALL" at the run line and it will have the DNS server and alternate DNS server IP's (after clicking the button next to the DNS ip number it shows the alternate)...Just put those DNS IP's into the W2K settings.

BBA acording to the paper I have from @home I am putting in the primary and secondary DNS server address. As they do not support DHCP(that is auto dectect network settings correct?).
Here are the setting I have
1.Primary DNS server address
2.secondary DNS server adress
"Do not set DNS ip's to any local ip you have" I have these set to what @ home has giving me typed in by hand.
3.Subdomain name/same as Domain name
4.IP address
5.DNS name/is the host name/computer name
6.Mail server
7.Directory server
8.news server
9.Web Proxy
10.server
11.Win RES disabled
12.gateway
13.subnet
Do not need to set a Login name for win98 either.
All of these I have to set by hand in win98 nothing is done for me. No kind of autodetect. Acutally I don't see a setting for DHCP.
Do I have to select the IP port address?
What am I missing? Did I leave something out.
Also win2k is on another partition so I will wipe it clean latter and do a clean install again.

Ok I just checked and It does use DHCP.But it not shown anywere in the network config?
Also my computer name is combined with the Domain name. CI-xxxxx-A.ruthfd1.tn.home.com is this how I should set it up in win2k and linux?
The host name followed by the domain name?
ANd the DNS server is the same as the one I typed in. So that is not the problem I am havine, right.
BTW the WINIPCFG /ALL tip is great.

BBA thanks for the tip.
It was the computer name. I had to combine the computer name with the Domain name for it to work http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
As I said before I must have missed something.
Cool...a little push helps sometimes huh?

Well lets start from scratch. Using Dialup or cable? is the internet connection directly connected to the win2K machine or is it trying to connect thru a different machine? If a different machine what ICS program are you using for the sharing? (such as sygate/wingate ect)
What happens when you type "http://209.10.73.149" Without the quotes of course http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif If you get SysOpts website then your problem is in the DNS configuration.
