Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : IE version 5 or Netscape Communicator ?
Hi,
I've recently upgraded my system from Win 95,using Netscape Communicator as my web browser; To Win 98 version B and IE 5.
I find that when using IE, a lot of the websites I go to have error messages "This page can not be displayed"? Is IE causing this problem ?
Thanks........

I use IE5 and have ever since it was released.
I think you'll find that if you were to use the latest version of Netscape you'd get the same errors on the same pages.

I have to agree with Scotter on that one. IE5.1 is much better!

Not to rock the boat, but... IE5 , at least on my computer, is so slooooooow, I hate to even access it. Netscape just cruises right along. Yous guys where IE5 works well, what kind of processor do you have??? Intel ,AMD, Cyrix?? Just curious...

I've got a Pentium 233 mmx and 64 megs of ram.
I also find that IE seems to be slower than Netscape Communicator. I thought that with the upgrade to Win98 I may as well give IE a try. I'll upgrade to 5.1 and see if that is any better.

Personally I hate IE for a few reasons, At our systems at work IE Seems to cause crashes on the machines. Most run IE5.1. We got one with IE3 and it seems to run ok.
I got IE5.1 at home and it runs Ok, but i don't run it often. If your going to use IE use 5.1.
I use ether Netscape4.7 or Opera most of the time. At this point, Opera Seems to be the fastest and most stable. At least for me, its also a smaller download than the others.
BTW: NS5 looks pretty nice so far :-)
Just my thoughts

AMD K6 3-400 96MB pc100 ram win98 first edition. and IE5.1 runs great. I have to agree though netscape does seem a bit faster. But it is more prone to crashes. That and you can't move the toolbars around like you can in IE.I put my standard buttons(customized of course)and address bar on top.Plenty of room for them running @1024X768.
As for the errors I don't have the problem of not being able to display pages very much.I do however get the error in the bottem left hand corner all the time and it does not seem to affect anything.

Currently running IE 5 and Netscape 4.7 both seem to have their own little quirks. They both seem to do the job but it all depends on how the site you are going to is setup.
If it is setup to have MS be the prefered browser then it will run better with MS and the same rings true for sites built to favor Netscape.
I do like MS a little better for downloads and NS a little better for surfing. It all depends on personal prefrences I guess.
Have fun and Happy surfing.
I'd have to say - neither one - go and download a copy of IE 4.01SP2 from the www.microsoft.com/ie (http://www.microsoft.com/ie) download area. I've had too many conflicts with IE5.X and hate being a beta tester for MS on their new product- whether or not it's free. I've uninstalled IE5 more times from WIN95 and WINNT4.0 than I can remember.
I've never crashed my system with IE4.01SP2 and replacing IE5 with it has resolved several previous conflicts.
