I'm sorry to ask this but I upgraded frim 128 to 256 and I have run system monitor while playing my most intensive graphic online games and I never even use my swapfile. Right now it's set at 256 min and max the same, if I reduce it will I get any more performance and if so what would be a good setting? Thanks

hi..it seems to depend on whom u ask....the "old rule" of Virt mem=RAM X 2.5 supposedly is now felt not accurate-esp if u have alot (ie over 64 mb) of ram...

suggest experienting...start at 2.5Xram>then drop it in stages until u have ram=lXvirtuyal memory---see what happens.

U can also play with your "Vcache" (in sys.ini)..start at 1/4Xram and vary it..again noting the results.

A previous post,,If I remember right said to use 180 swp/file w/256RAM, and 256 swp/file w64--128--198RAM. I set my 64meg IBM @256. Next session got bsod about 1 hr into usage. Ignored it, re-boot. 3 sessions under belt, no more bsod's. fyi, a great site for Win98 problems is www.ehelpfree.com/nathan (http://www.ehelpfree.com/nathan) ,, good luck , please,, Take me to your leader.

This is a real old question...And the answers still foggy to this day
Okay...try this
Run Q2 or someting, minimize it, open about 20 IE windows, ICQ, AIM and anything else u use.
Then see if your swapfile cracks...If not, then just dont use a swapfile!

If it doesnt, round it to the next highest 32MB's (32,64,96,128,etc), and use that for a swapfile on the C Drive.

I kinda figured that 256 min and max might be a bit much, and yes I know that it is a very old question but whenever you ask it you get a hundred different answers. Can someone tell me about that cacheman program and if it is necessary to use it with win 98? I play alot of online games and whatever tweaking I can do for any little bit of performance boost i'll try it. Thanks again everyone

Ok well I did a little test and fired up drakan online, system monitor,5 IE windows, quickbooks pro, quicken, photo express, napster, outlook express, scisoft sandra, roger wilco and still had 51mb of physical memory left and never even touched my swap I never run all this stuff at the same time, not even three of them so I will probably be ok with 180 min and max right?

fyi there are some buggy games out there, especially online. Ultima Online drains ram as crazy. I have 128mb of ram after 5 min of play i have nothing left. There is a program out there called Rambooster; it free's up the ram when needed. I use it all the time especially while playing online games.
good luck ...

I have 96meg of ram and a swapfile fixed at 150 or so and have had no problems.

Shoot, if i had 256mb, I'd run with virtual memory turned off. I do, at times now, with 128mb, but i'm not a gamer. not sure how games would react with no swap file.

If someone tries virtual memory off, and plays games, let us know how it goes...thanx

Well, I know Q2 won't even start without a swapfile present. Even if you have so much memory that it'll never touch the swap, it still looks for it before the game starts, and if it's not there you get an error.

I gave up on this issue and let windows manage my swap file. Seems to do at least as good a job as setting it manually. I can't see any performance gain on my machine using a fixed swap file. In any case, the more ram, the less need of a swap file so 150MB ought to work.
Certain games will run FAR better if you just let windows handle it.
