CD-ROM stopped working unexplainably. I've got a Micron Millennia, PIII450, 96MB, Windows98, with an NEC CD-ROM DRIVE 28 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif (I think...that's what the device manager has listed). When I start computer, it goes to Micron screen (where it says enter F2 to go to setup), and then hangs without loading Windows. If I hit the "eject" on CD-ROM, it beeps and then Windows loads. But when I try to access CD-ROM drive in Windows, it pops up a little box telling me "D:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready". This happens from My Computer\D: icon, Start menu items, shortcuts and also when I just "pop in" a CD for auto-run. The device manager's properties for the device says it is working properly, and I have tried checking and unchecking both "Disconnect" and "DMA" boxes under properties. I also opened the tower and made sure my connections were tight. Any help? Thanks in advance!

Next time that you boot, and it says to enter F2 to go into setup, press the F2 key and go into the bios.

Re-detect all of your IDE devices (usually under the detect hard-drives section). That should make sure that the bios picks up the CD-ROM correctly. Then save and exit your bios and see if Windows works correctly.

well it does see it in windows.. therefore the BIOS should see it.. well go to device manager do you see any yellow ! marks.. especially in harddisk controllers.. next go to performance tab.. and what does the white rectangular box say.. if you see it.. next go to autoexec.bat and config.sys and rem out any cd rom lines that may be loading. If you see ! marks on harddisk controllers.. run a Virus Scan on harddrive.. with latests Dats. if find nothing.. open up case.. reseat cd-rom.. if still nothing.. replace cable.. if cannot do that.. then buy new cd-rom.

pretty much looks like Jin has the bases covered http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Let us know what you have tried and what does or doesnt work for you.

ps. NOT ALL bios's will directly list CD-ROMS. see if you can choose AUTO for the IDE harddrive configurations

Thanks for the advice Target. I tried what you said and it seemed to work fine. But then I rebooted, and now it takes approximately 5 minutes after a CD is inserted before autorun kicks in. It also still says "device not accessible" when I click on "D:" icon in My Computer or try to access CD drive any other way. So each time I switch CDs it takes 5 minutes before I can access it. Also, when rebooting, the system stops on MICRON screen (where it says "Press F2 to enter setup") and will not load windows until I press EJECT on CD drive. Then windows loads fine. Anyone else ever had this?
