It is a power macintosh 7100/66 it belongs to a friend. She wants to get on the internet but I don't know the first thing about setting up the dialer. It dials but then it won't connect. Any help would be great I will be the first to admit I don't know the first thing about Apple computers. Thanks Butchk.

I have worked with Macs on LANs, and have rarely had occasion to use modems, but I will try to give you a hand...What ISP are you trying to use? Check in Extensions Manager, within Control Panels to see that all of the extensions with the associated ISP software are turned on...What type of modem, internal or external? Also, seeing as how it is a 66mhz, I would recommend getting a new computer; especially, if the modem is internal, it's probably not too speedy...which could be why it's not connecting after dialing, if it's too slow, there might not be an appropriate modem on the other end. Just a thought -- when I had an old Packard Bell with 2400 bps, just for s**** & giggles I tried connecting and it just wouldn't, I even called AOL and they said they were phasing out modems that slow...Forgot to ask, what OS is on the Mac? Have all updates been made?

Tailkinker: It is a external modem Zoom 56k the computer seem to be moderately kind of fast like a 486 dx4 120. The lady that owns the computer said if I can't get it working she will probly replace it. On the Packard Bell computer you would have probly gotten on if you had a 14.4 modem. I am also having trouble with the CD drive it don't do anything. Isn't it suppose to come up when you put in a cd? Thanks for your help

Butchk -- It could be the OS she's using...like I mentioned before, the OSs are just as buggy as Microsoft, and there are updates done all the time. Check the version of OS that's necessary for the extensions for the modem...thru Control Panels go to extensions manager...it will list all of the extensions with their version number, and what OS they are compatible with...also, depending on which version OS, if you click once on the tab symbol (blue) it will expand the box so that it gives some info on each extension...

For the CD drive, if there are install programs on it, it will open up a new window. If it's a plain old diskette or CD that you had burned info on to it or a clipart or even a music cd, you have to double-click on it...I don't know if you have time to spend on it, but Apple's website is very informative...and there are forums where you can present your troubles and, if an Apple Tech doesn't respond, a multitude of others with similar problems/solutions will help you out -- just like here! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Again, tho, if you could tell me the OS and what ISP she's trying to use, I could do some more digging for you. If it's AOL, I have heard nothing but horror stories from two people here that bought Macs for home use, and they had to go through all sorts of hoops to try to get connections made. Personally, if it was me, I would ditch it and, if I was happy with the old Mac, then check into a G4. The ones we have here are pretty kick-***! Graphics are great too, even tho it's just ATI accelerators...of course, like everything else, it depends what she wants to do with it, and whether or not the programs she wants to use are also written for Macs...

Ok...here's the poop...I talked to my buddy who knows all about Macs -- Check in Apple Extras Folder to see if there is a program called Network Software Selector. If there is, run it to select Open Transport and try connecting again. If still nothing, try eliminating the modem init string -- sometimes that confuses the Mac. Still no connection? Then, and I hope I explain this correctly -- If you have access to another Mac that can connect to the internet, go to Tucows.com and search and download FreePPP; this is a modem dialer that works extremely well with just about any kind of modem available, I think my buddy said it was up to version 2.6, now. Get rid of the modem dialer that came with the modem, and try this one. If you don't have another Mac connected to internet, then try this - download Stuffit Expander for PC, I'm pretty sure there is one, download FreePPP to your computer, use Stuffit to put it on a diskette and take it to the Mac, and, hopefully Stuffit is already on there, and you can load it onto the 7100/66. As a final try, if you have a Zip drive (once again, providing the Mac has the SCSI software to be able to handle he Iomega drivers), then you could put FreePPP on a zip disk and transfer it to the Mac. There is also a file in the System Folder called MacTCPDNR -- you can trash this file and it will be recreated when you reboot the computer. Also, to help out with Speed, rebuilding the desktop file (Hold down the Apple & Option keys simultaneously while the computer boots up, once you get to the desktop a dialogue box will ask you "Do you really want to rebuild the desktop file?" and answer yes. The desktop file is a type of cache file that gets either too full or corrupted...There is also a cool free utility you can download from Tucows called TechTool...it does a lot too...

Sorry to keep babbling, but I like to help if I can, and when I can't I find someone that can...hehehe...Good Luck!

The only Zip drive that runs on both are the USB of which that is not. As far as the modem
goes a 56k depending on the modem may have an updated string on there site. I have a Best Data external 56k on my wifes 6400/180
and it works find. Try calling out from Claris communications (WP). You may have the wrong modem selected, but try GV Platitium or hayes error correcting. As far as the ISP try an other phone number. I have had no trouble getting on AOL with any MAC getting on the Internet tho is a different story.(;

I have a Zip drive at work that utilizes a serial cable, and comes with both Mac and PC software on the "master" zip disk...As long as there is a serial port in the back of the Mac, it should work, providing you have the Iomega drivers for the Mac. This suggestion was a stretch, of course, but it has the potential to work...Of course, you could find an AOL CD with free time and see if that connects...Have you tried talking to the people at the ISP company?

Yes I have talked to the ISP and they said at the time they no longer support freePPP. I figured how to install the TCP/IP on the system so I will try talking to them again. I was also able to obtain one of their Technical Support Manuals and it has a lot of info in it. So I think I will read it then call them again. If you can think of anything else I would like to here from you. Thanks Butchk

Well, I just talked to my bud again, and we are fresh out of ideas...Sorry...If anything can be said, tho, you now have a finer appreciation of Macs, right? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Have you tried the Apple website and their user forum? I had a couple of problems with the Macs at work, and those users helped me out with as much knowledge and courtesy as the various users on this site...Just remember to write down the date and the exact topic that you post, cause it can get a little confusing going back to check out if anyone sent you any replies...

Good Luck -- Sorry I couldn't have been of more help...
